Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Olympics dates have been shifted to July 2021 instead of 2020. The pandemic has also delayed the NBA season. Not only did the 19/20 season get delayed by three months, but the 20-21 season will also be starting over a month later than the usual dates.

This could lead to a potential clash between the two events. This has increased uncertainty over the schedule for next season. A lot of NBA coaches, like Steve Kerr and Nick Nurse, are coaching teams in the Olympics and they are worried about how the league will adjust their schedule.

NBA might have to adjust their schedule

“They’ve talked to us on our team calls that it might be a condensed schedule next year, more so than in the past,” said Hawks GM Travis Schlenk. USA Today’s Marc Medina had reported that it would still be an 82-season game. If both of this is true, we could be in for a repeat of the 2011-12 lockout season. But worse. During the 11/12 season, 66 games were played since the league started on Christmas Day. That led to fixture congestion and fatigue.

20/21 will be worse because despite starting in December it will be an 82 game season. The NBA might be forced to do this since they need to stay clear of the Olympics qualifying tournaments too.

Gregg Popovich and Team USA have already qualified for the 12-team tournament. Despite that, assistant coach Steve Kerr is still unsure about the situation. “Believe it or not, I haven’t had a single conversation with Pop about that,” Kerr said. “And the reason is we don’t know.”

Team Canada’s coach Nick Nurse was also doubtful about the situation. “I think they’re talking about pushing it back. But if they do that, then it’s probably going to run into the Olympics, or really close to it, right?”

The other coaches involved with the Olympics are Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown who is in charge of Team Nigeria. Raptors assistant coach Sergio Scariolo will be leading Team Spain whereas Sixers head coach Brett Brown will be in charge of Team Australia.
