The BYU Cougars may have dropped their first game of the regular season in a tight 2-point loss to UConn — a result that overshadowed AJ Dybantsa’s electric 25-point performance. But as frustrating as that defeat was, it’s quickly becoming the least of BYU’s concerns. Off the court, far more troubling details are beginning to surface about forward Kennard Davis Jr., casting a shadow over the program at a moment when they should have been riding early-season momentum.

What Happened to Kennard Davis Jr.?

Last week, junior forward Kennard Davis Jr. was arrested, according to a press release from the Provo Police Department. The forward sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Provo Police Department for further evaluation, Provo Police public information officer Janna-Lee Holland confirmed.

The incident took place near the intersection of 900 West and Center Street in Provo, where officers arrived at around 11:45 a.m. Police conducted a series of standard field sobriety tests on Kennard Davis Jr. right there at the scene, and their findings were enough to move forward with a DUI arrest.

“During the accident investigation, officers found cause to place one of the drivers — Kennard Davis, aged 20 — under arrest for suspected DUI. Davis was transported to the Provo Police Station for further investigation and was subsequently cited with DUI charges. He was released for medical treatment for minor injuries, and his vehicle was impounded,” the news release stated.

To add to this, an officer on the scene noted that he suspected Davis was impaired. “I responded to assist on a traffic accident when I began to suspect impairment from one of the drivers,” the officer wrote in the report, as per ESPN. “He was ultimately arrested for driving under the influence.”

DUI & Drug Possession Charges on Kennard Davis Jr.

According to a redacted police report obtained by ESPN, Kenneth Davis Jr. was cited for marijuana possession and driving under the influence following the car crash. While neither the school nor the program has offered any further updates or shared details about the exact circumstances surrounding Thursday’s accident, they did reveal a few things.

BYU’s Response on Kennard Davis Jr.

The Cougars were fully aware of the situation unfolding back home, even as they traveled to Boston on Thursday ahead of their showdown with No. 3 UConn at TD Garden — a game they would eventually lose. On Thursday night, they released a brief statement: “We are aware of the allegations and looking into the situation.”

Kennard Davis Jr. was seen on the sidelines as BYU battled UConn, but he sat in street clothes and never suited up. After the game, head coach Kevin Young confirmed that Davis has been suspended indefinitely for a rules violation. “To be determined on the length,” Young said.

A huge blow for BYU going forward, as Davis was averaging 9 points per game while shooting 50% from beyond the arc. And to make matters worse, Keba Keita has now become another major injury concern after taking a hard hit to the head while battling UConn’s Jaylin Stewart for a loose ball.

These are tough times for the Cougars. If they want to keep their promising season on track, they’ll have to stick together and not let these off-court setbacks derail the momentum they’ve worked so hard to build.
