In the seventh round͏ of the ͏2009 NFL Draft, the Pittsbu͏rg͏h Steelers selected A.Q. Shipley, a hom͏etown he͏ro who went to M͏oon High͏ School and ͏played college football at P͏enn Stat͏e. Initi͏ally, the prospect of playing for ͏his hometown team was a dream come true for Shipley, but he soon realized it wasn’t the perfect scenario he had imagined.
“It was a dream come true. It was like, that’s where I wanted to be,” Shipley said on NetWorth with Justin Pugh podcast. “Mike Webster was the epitome of, when I became a center that’s where I wanted to be.” Shipley was excited about the history of Pittsburgh centers, mentioning legends like Mike Webster, Dermontti Dawson, and Jeff Hartings. “And I get there and I’m like, ‘Oh this is gonna be great. And then it was the worst thing for me.'”
Shipley explained that being back home was more of a hindrance than a help. “I’m back home, I’m back home in a comfortable environment, I’m back home around my family, I can kind of lean on them.” This comfort, he realized, was not conducive to his best performance. “I’m one of the guys that like, I do best when I’m away from everything. When you put me in a dungeon and I have to focus on something, that’s when I do best.”

Shipley spent eight NFL seasons with various teams. He played four years for the Arizona Cardinals. Two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Also, one year each with the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he met Tom Brady. Over 110 games, he started an impressive 72 times. The Steelers drafted Shipley, showing his talent early on. But drafted by one’s hometown team has risks. The comforts of home could overshadow the drive to excel on the field. And Shipley faced this challenge during his NFL journey.
AQ Shipley’s time with the Steelers
In 2009, AQ Shipley spent the season on the Steelers’ practice squad. Despite the Steelers wanting to keep him, Shipley chose to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, who had planned to draft him.
Shipley looks back on spending time with friends from his hometown with fondness. He admits that he “probably” should not have, but says “you live and learn.” After a year on the Steelers’ practice squad in 2009, he signed with the Eagles. Although Shipley did not play for the Eagles, his relationship with Ryan Grigson, who was the Eagles’ director of player personnel at that time, turned out to be helpful.
In Pittsburgh, A.Q. Shipley formed a strong bond with offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, which later benefited his career. In the interview, Shipley highlighted his relationship with ex-teammate Tom Brady, Shipley said “But it’s true like I watched and here’s why he made everyone around him better is because he held everybody accountable, and because he was the greatest of all time and his uh ability to see success” . In 2020, both join͏ed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wh͏ere their professional relatio͏nship flourishe͏d, contributing to the team’s Super Bowl LV win.
