Now that the suspense of the NFL Draft is over, the question that remains is, who will be the next big quarterback? If the top picks are anything to go by, then Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye would be the top players in the running.

While we’ll get some elite players from this year’s draft, some would also go bust. Busts are players who are expected to become elite franchise starters but fail to meet these projected heights instead. Daniels might be one such draft bust, as per a former Washington guard.

Why Dan Quinn’s playbook might not work for his new rookie

The coach plays an integral role in determining whether a player will turn out to be a precious asset to the franchise or will remain on the sidelines. According to Mark Schlereth, the teams the rookies land in will be a pivotal factor in deciding the newbie quarterbacks’ future. On The Stinkin Truth Podcast, the three-time Super Bowl champion pointed out how Chicago doesn’t have ample offense experience required to hone their No. 1 pick into a star.

Furthermore, Schlereth discussed that all the teams that picked the first four quarterbacks have defensive coaches, which might not be the right setting for a budding NFL player. “It’s hard to develop a young quarterback with defensive-minded head coach because you’re always going to play to that defensive strength,” he said. “Think about the first three players taken. Eberflus, the coach of The Bears; Dan Quinn, coach of the Washington Commanders, and then you’ve got at number three, Jerod Mayo, coach of the New England Patriots. Number four is Raheem Morris for the Atlanta Falcons, so those guys are already, from a development standpoint, are going to play for the defensive coaches.”

While the former guard made his concerns about Quinn’s defense-leaning tendencies clear, the HC has high hopes for his new mentee. Though impressed with the QB’s performance in LSU, Daniels might not be the designated starter next season.

Quinn has been vocal about what made the LSU quarterback an easy choice for the draft. “Dedication” and “resilience” were the top qualities that jumped out to the head coach, who also praised the rookie for being “tough” and “competitive.” However, all these words don’t guarantee a starting spot for Daniels, as the coach pointed out.

Through the Commanders’ official site, the head coach expressed the team’s aim of building the roster with the utmost competitiveness. Quinn said, “When that time comes [Daniels starting], when he’s ready, then that’s when we’ll do it. There’s no timeline on that, we’re fortunate here to have a good, strong quarterback room. We’ll let it all play out.”

This seems to be the wise move for Washington. A rookie, no matter how talented, needs time to get accustomed to playing in a league as huge as the NFL. With the right training and guidance from other veteran teammates and the experienced head coach, Daniels might eventually get ready to take over as the starter for the franchise. For now, he will train with the other quarterback in the room, Marcus Mariota, who signed up with Washington this offseason. The rookie understands the reality too and expressed, “It is not a given I’m a starter Week One.” Daniels further added, “I got to earn it. I got to learn the playbook, earn the respect of my teammates, and go out there and try to win football games.”

Like most of the fans, Dan Quinn seems to be confident of Jayden Daniels’ abilities and doesn’t plan on rushing the quarterback into responsibility. Under the coach’s wing and the new restructuring of the Commanders, the rookie might clinch the starting job sooner than expected!
