The Kansas City Chiefs‘ running back is returning home! Not getting his fifth-year option granted last year, Clyde Edwards-Helaire was set to enter the market as an unrestricted free agent. However, he has chosen to play for his draft home for another year.

The 32nd overall pick of the 2020 draft will be continuing his time in Kansas City as the backup to Isiah Pacheco. With inconsistent play because of injuries, the veteran understood the team’s decision not to extend his contract and ultimately decided that Kansas City would be the “perfect place” for him. And no one is happier at Edwards-Helaire’s decision than his teammate, Travis Kelce.

As the news of Edwards-Helaire rejoining the Chiefs in a one-year deal was officialized by the Chiefs, there was an influx of wishes from the KC Kingdom. Kelce congratulated his teammate and friend in the comment section of the Instagram announcement on the team’s official account. The tight end wrote, “My brotha forever!!! Let’s go get some more dubs!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻”

Kelce hasn’t been shy of encouraging “good brother Clyde” in his rookie years. The tight end had applauded the running back’s performance on his podcast, ‘New Heights.’ While discussing the RB’s stellar touchdown catch, Kelce called it “one of the best catches of the season so far.” The camaraderie between the two runs deep, and Edwards-Helaire quoted Kelce as one of the reasons for his return.

When asked about his decision to return to the Chiefs, the LSU product laid out his manifold reasons for the move. First off, it was practicality. The running back candidly spoke about how he understood the team’s decision to deny him the fifth-year option, as he wasn’t the starter, plus the salary cap issues. But Kansas City “literally is home” for Edwards-Helaire, and he has played, gotten engaged, and learned about life there. “It’s just somewhere that I feel like I became a man,” said Helaire.

Apart from his wish to win more Super Bowls with his draft team, the running back quoted his bond with his teammates, especially Kelce, that cemented his choice to return. He shared how the tight end had been his constant pillar of support through his four-year career and has stood by him in highs and lows.

“Personal level, from football to on a day-to-day basis, he’s someone that’s been in my corner and picked me up from my lowest of lows,” Edwards-Helaire said, as per Kansas City Star. “And then when I was on my highest of highs, just being there, trying to put a rocket on my back. So you just have that camaraderie,” added Helaire.

Edward-Helaire returns to continue his kinship with Travis Kelce with the aim of achieving a three-peat clear in his mind. The running back had 1,845 rushing yards, 765 receiving yards, and 19 touchdowns and hoped to make the most of his time with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 season.
