It seems like taking his words back didn’t do the damage control for Patrick Mahomes. After a rollercoaster of events and loads of speculations, the QB has paid his price for lashing out at the NFL officiating. Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid is also paying for his part, according to media outlet Profootballtalk.

They reported that the league has slapped some hefty fines on the Chiefs duo for the comments they made following the Bills‘ loss. With that, the QB entered the league’s hit list along with two other players for disagreeing with the play calls. One of them turns out to have been fined just earlier today.

Following the Bills loss, Mahomes said he had never seen such calls in his seven-year-NFL career. “Regardless of if we win or lose, just for it to end with another game where we’re talking about the refs, it’s just not what we want for the NFL or for football”, the QB openly revealed his disappointment with the officiating that day.

His emotions were still coming out when meeting Josh Allen following the game, as Mahomes said, “Wildest f—ing call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides on that play, man. F—ing terrible”, in a complaining manner. Mahomes apologized later, but that doesn’t seem to have convinced the league. According to PFT, the QB and his coach likely have been fined, with the guessed amount being $25k and $50k, respectively.

Mahomes was true to his sportsmanship the following day. “Obviously you don’t want to react that way”, he regretted. “I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win, but obviously you can’t do that, can’t be that way toward officials or really anybody in life”, the QB felt he made a mistake in the heat of the moment.

“More than anything, I regretted the way I acted toward Josh after the game, because he had nothing to do with it.” Mahomes felt bad for his conversation with Allen. He even said it was not good, and it didn’t set a good example for kids watching the game. However, all of that didn’t change the league’s mind as it seems. And Mahomes joined two other players who made the same ‘mistake’ of calling out the NFL this season.

Hours before Mahomes was fined, Browns‘ DE, Myles Garrett, was informed by his close source about a $25k fine for bold remarks on the play calls vs Jaguars, according to ESPN. “Someone has to hold them accountable for the plays or the calls they don’t make. And they need to be under the same kind of microscope as we are every single play.” The DE held nothing back when hitting the league. He even went as far as saying he didn’t care about a backlash, stating,“Absolutely not.”

However, the first fine of the season came a month ago when Steelers‘ wide receiver Diontae Johnson was fined the same amount for his criticism of play calls in their loss vs the Jaguars. “They was calling some stupid stuff,” Johnson said. “They should get fined for calling bad, making worse, terrible calls, and stuff like that… I don’t care what nobody say. They cost us the game”, he even insisted the officials get fined for their repeated ineffective calls. These words were enough for him to land the season’s first fine for calling out the league.

Mahomes’ regret went in vain after he slipped his mouth. But it doesn’t change the fact that more and more players are fearlessly coming out with criticisms of the league’s officiating. And that likely hints toward a bigger problem, much bigger than the fines.
