“Strangers Donated Some Money”: Steve Smith Shares the Deep Impact of the Utah’s Assistance That Shaped His Financial Destiny

‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ Steve Smith Sr., the former Panthers WR, has fulfilled all the responsibilities that came with his iconic football career. His appearance on the Pat MacAfee show was received with a roaring crowd in the background cheering their hearts out for the five-time Pro Bowler. The WR shared his journey from his college football days to the ‘Steve Smith Family Foundation’.

Times sure were not the best when Smith Sr. started football. Yet, the WR waded through his 16 seasons with a smile on his face. Reminiscing his college days, the three-time Pro-Bowler shared a personal fact about himself, a heartwarming one, that made the background audience even more proud of his journey.

Coming from a humble background, the Smith family was tight on finances. Yet, Smith Sr. was not someone to give up on his dreams. Coming to his aid was his second university, which helped him stand out as a talented wide receiver, along with getting an education. “I grew up in LA. But I got my opportunity because of some strangers who donated some money at the University of Utah,” said the former WR, with a heart full of respect for the organization.

He added, “And the University of Utah decided that I was good enough that I got the opportunity to get an education and play college football. This is the school that gave me my opportunity, so that’s who I am through and through.” Looking at the appreciation and gratitude that Smith has for the University, the crowd once again went bonkers.

Smith Sr. has the accolades any professional football player would dream of having. More than that, the WR has been an exceptional player since his college days. However, Smith was associated with the University of Utah after he attended Santa Monica College for two years (1997-98). Santa Monica was where Smit initially started the football with former NFL WR Chad Johnson under the guidance of coach Robert Taylor. Following this, Smith took a transfer to the University of Utah, a place where he received recognition as a wide receiver. Now, the iconic retired WR through his organization Steve Smith Family Foundations aims to help those in need, especially the ones who are being affected by domestic violence, also spreading mental health awareness.

After securing a position at the Utah Utes football team, the starting position player finally made it to the standout wide receiver position. He, along with his future RB Mike Anderson, created a foundation for their professional careers.

During his time with the team, he set a record for yards per catch with a 20.6 average. Moreover, Smith Sr. was selected twice to play for the conference’s all-star teams. Adding more to his college accomplishments, the WR became offensive MVP on January 13, 2001, in the East-West Shrine game. Now, Smith and his wife have bestowed an athletic scholarship at the University of Utah, giving back, as his life comes full circle.
