The Denver Broncos mourn the loss of Joe Collier, the legendary defensive coordinator who shaped the iconic “Orange Crush” defense. Collier passed away peacefully at his Littleton home on Monday at 91. The specific cause of death remains undisclosed.

Collier has spent 20 long years with the Denver Broncos (1969-1988), which makes him one of the longest-serving coaches in team history. He changed the game with his innovative 3-4 defensive formation, using three linemen and four linebackers. This strategy became known as the “Orange Crush” defense, inspired by the Broncos’ bright jerseys.  His defense system helped the team reach three Super Bowls, and thus, the Broncos honored his incredible impact with their heartfelt announcement following his passing.

Collier’s influence was not limited to the Broncos. He mentored numerous young players who later became Ring of Fame stars, such as Billy Thompson, Paul Smith, and Rich “Tombstone” Jackson. His legacy extends even further as he played a pivotal role in shaping the coaching philosophy of Bill Belichick, one of the NFL’s most successful coaches. “I learned to see the game through the eyes of Joe Collier and … Joe, how he had me break it down for him, I could see how he looked at it as a defensive coach,” Belichick reflected in 2020. This profound impact on the NFL community is proof of Collier’s greatness, and fans have joined the Broncos in expressing their grief over the loss of this NFL legend.

The Denver Broncos’ loss of Joe Collier resonated deeply with fans.  “Broncos Nation, you have my utmost condolences. Rest in peace Joe Collier,” wrote one fan.  Many echoed the sentiment with “RIP” messages and tributes to Collier’s  “Orange Crush” legacy. One wrote, “Orange Crush forever! #RIP Coach” and another soon chimed in with, “I’m sorry for the loss. Safe landings Mr. Collier” for the defensive mastermind.

Among the condolences, a question arose from a genuine fan — “Joe probably had as much to do with me falling in love with the Broncos as anybody. The Orange Crush was this team’s identity for many years. I can’t fathom why he was never given a spot in the Ring of Fame. I can’t think of many who deserved that honor more. RIP, Coach Collier.” Interestingly, Collier himself served on the Ring of Fame Selection Committee for over 20 years, a role that arguably holds greater significance than his own induction. This unique position speaks volumes about the respect and recognition he commanded within the NFL community. Another fan highlighted Collier’s influence in the NFL, stating, “Bill Belichick owes everything to Joe Collier tbh.” While Belichick hasn’t released any official statement yet, the NFL community undoubtedly awaits his tribute to his mentor.
