The veteran thought that the quarterback did not assume responsibility for the poor plays he made. However, he has no problem taking credit for things that go right on the field. This behavior, in Smith’s eyes, is undeniably disappointing.

He also went as far as to say that Carolina Panthers can never build a team foundation around him. His exact words were, “Watching him play quarterback…there is no possible way any team that’s looking for a foundational quarterback sign Baker Mayfield.” While Steve Smith Sr. is popularly known as a harsh critic, he is not the only one who has something to say about Mayfield. However, his toughness as a critic is extremely factual. Smith said he had watched all of the Panthers’ game and cited specific examples wherein he believed the quarterback did not see a receiver and made bad plays. Moreover, Smith is not the only one who has an issue with the way Mayfield performs. There are other analysts who have a problem with the way he performs.

Football player turned analyst Shannon Sharpe also had certain complaints with the way Baker Mayfield played. He did not like the way he played at all and made that clear on ‘Undisputed’. He went on to point out that Mayfield is last in 2022 in terms of QBR. Sharpe also went far enough to say that Mayfield is not suitable to play quarterback and said, “he’s a bull he’s trash and you know it.”

With several sports analysts speaking on his quality of play, one must wonder about Mayfield’s future in the Panthers uniform. The question that remains is what changes will the Panthers make now to ensure some wins or a better season next year?
