Rock, who owns the XFL, announced the news on Monday. He tweeted that the collaboration will be exciting for the game and that his top priority will remain the players. The Rock, who loves the game himself, is set to make a distinctive contribution to the game.

What does the partnership between the Dwayne Johnson-owned XFL and NFL mean?

The league’s partnership with the NFL is not concerned with games or teams. Instead, it will focus solely on improving health and safety initiatives, including “forward-thinking physical and mental fitness programs for players, the study of playing surfaces and equipment, and the sharing of game trends and data.”

In a press release, XFL’s Co-owner and chairperson, Dany Garcia, said, “We are bringing forward an XFL that is progressive and forward-thinking when it comes to innovation, leveraging the newest technology to enhance game-day experience.” She stated that sharing insights between the two leagues would enhance the game and players.

XFL’s history

Wrestling executive, Vince McMahon founded the XFL in 2000. However, the league shuttered after just one season, followed by McMahon’s efforts to revive it again in 2018. The pandemic cut short the relaunch in February 2020, and in April of that year, the league filed for bankruptcy protection.

Yet in 2020, Dwayne Johnson and business partner Garcia acquired the defunct league from McMahon for $15million. Garcia started marketing the road to 2023 campaign just last month, announcing the return of XFL in February 2023.

The pair is building the league to provide more opportunities for players and to contribute positively to the game. Therefore, after teaming up with the NFL, it is certain to provide benefits to both the game and the players. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the partnership turns out.
