Dallas Cowboys suffered a setback at the start of the new season. They surrendered their opener against the Bucs and also lost starting QB Dak Prescott to a thumb injury, which may sideline him for two months. Team owner Jerry Jones was quick to bring in 28-year-old Cooper Rush as a starter. He is likely to remain under center till Prescott makes a return.

However, Rush has not received active support from Cowboys fans and game experts. He found an ally in NFL expert Phil Simms. The former Giants QB said there isn’t a huge drop-off between Cooper Rush and Dak Prescott. His opinion did not convince former Patriots WR Julian Edelman. “Who is Cooper Rush?,” he asked Simms.

Cooper Rush and the replacement debate

An experience of 15 years has helped Phil Simms to figure out who is a capable player and who isn’t. According to him, Rush is not a bad choice for the Cowboys. Cooper Rush has got a good arm. He has got experience. Led the team to victory last year. He can make the place and it is not gonna be a huge drop for me” Simms said.

The idea of a like-for-like replacement did not excite the 36-year-old Edelman. “Hold on! Who is Cooper Rush? Who is Cooper Rush?,” he asked. But Simms did not give up on his choice. “We are gonna find out,” he replied, in a confident tone.

Rush has done well in the past

The Michigan QB was once called upon in 2021 as a replacement for Prescott. This was when a calf injury prevented him from taking part in the game against Vikings. The 28-year-old #10 performed fairly well.

He went for 24 of 40 for 325 yards, alongside two touchdowns and one interception. The Cowboys won the game 20-16. However, he has not started in any other games in his career in the NFL. A good outing in the NFL can certainly boost the hopes of Rush and his team, to reboot their campaign positively.
