Following their thrilling Super Bowl victory in 2020, the Chiefs made a momentous decision to secure Patrick Mahomes for the long haul by signing a staggering half-a-billion-dollar contract, spanning an entire decade. This highly lucrative contract had a profound impact on the quarterback market and extended its influence to other sports industries as well. However, as time has passed, circumstances have changed, leading to a complete shift.

Mahomes’s $450 million deal now pales in comparison to the contracts of soccer athletes, especially after the involvement of Middle Eastern countries in soccer. One noteworthy example is soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo, whose annual payout doubled simply by moving to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr.

The 2x MVP currently earns $45 million annually, which is not too shabby. However, other top athletes in their respective fields are making significantly more money than him. Before joining Al Nassr, for the previous 18 months, Ronaldo had experienced a notable decline in performance. He constantly ran into controversies and even struggled to lead his national team to qualify for the World Cup finals. Nevertheless, he was still signed with one of the biggest sports contracts in the history of sports.

Upon joining Al Nassr, Ronaldo’s annual pay has doubled, now reaching $75 million. Moreover, the US soccer community was left astounded when the GOAT of soccer, Lionel Messi, joined Inter Miami in the MLS. To add to the surprise, he also signed an incredibly lucrative deal rumored to be around $60 million per year.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that the best QB from the league, who’s also the defending Super Bowl champ, is lacking behind in terms of annual pay. Moreover, Mahomes’ third-largest contract has now been surpassed by numerous athletes, including some within his own league.

Keeping aside athletes from other sports industries, Mahomes can not even compete with players from the NFL. Approximately three years since Mahomes signed his contract with the Chiefs, other teams haven’t simply remained idle. They have pushed the boundaries and surpassed his annual pay by a mile. Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Aaron Rodgers are among the 6 quarterbacks who are currently making more money than the 2x Super Bowl champ. There have also been speculations about him dropping to the ninth place if Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert finalize a restriction of their contract before this season.

From an outside perspective, the deal may appear unfavorable for Mahomes. However, his perspective differs significantly. The 2x Super Bowl champ believes he has amassed enough money to live happily ever after. And Mahomes has said in the past that he has no intention of hurting the team, in pursuit of a more lucrative deal.

Therefore, it’s safe to say Mahomes has chosen the Tom Brady route. He intends to bring in better players who will provide better support than to be paid an extremely lucrative amount that could hinder the team’s overall success. There are also several reports that indicate Mahomes’ deal restructure, as they wouldn’t want their star QB unhappy. Only time will tell how everything unfolds before us.
