Patrick Mahomes used his payday to become a part-owner in Major League Baseball side Kansas City Royals on July 28, 2020. According to Forbes, the franchise was valued at roughly a billion dollars back then. Hence, the Super Bowl LIV MVP had to pay a hefty sum to become the part-owner of the American League team.

Kansas City Royals soon announced the news via a statement released on Tuesday. Their chairman and principal owner, John Sherman, spoke to the press after the announcement.

“We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise. Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.”

Sherman further highlighted Mahomes’ roots in baseball by highlighting how his father, Pat Mahomes, played 11 seasons in MLB.

Patrick Mahomes also released a statement expressing his gratitude and excitement at being a part-owner of the team.

“I’m honored to become a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals, I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

Patrick Mahomes also owns MLS Club Sporting Kansas City

Exactly a year after Mahomes became part owner of KC Royals, he bought ownership of Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City. According to an ESPN source, Mahomes and the club were in talks for the past 12 months. The source also added that “Mahomes has attended at least 12 MLS matches at Children’s Mercy Park, and even led the “I Believe” chant prior to a 2018 playoff game.

Commenting about adding Sporting Kansas City to his collection, Mahomes said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love. Sporting is a community-oriented club, and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

Meanwhile, his wife, Brittany Mahomes (nee Matthews), also owns the NWSL franchise, Kansas City Current. The Chiefs QB also joined the team as part of the ownership group.
