Remember what went down at the Paris Olympics last year between Jordan Chiles and the Romanian athletes? It was one of the most explosive moments in sports. Chiles, riding high after a successful inquiry, bumped up her score in the women’s floor final, believing she’d made history alongside her teammate and close friend Simone Biles. But that joy quickly turned into disbelief. A Romanian protest flipped the script, and Chiles was ultimately forced to return her medal. Now, a year may have passed, but the sting of that moment still lingers.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Chiles shared a long message highlighting how she was robbed of her bronze medal. “A year ago today I walked off the floor in Paris with a bronze medal-and lessons I’ll carry with me for life. The hardest moments really do teach you the most. This year had its highs, but the lows hit different. Every setback and every disappointment made me dig deeper and showed me what I’m truly made of. It also showed me who’s really in my corner,” she wrote.

Chiles could have made history alongside Biles, but errors in judgment forced her to fight for the medal even a year after the event had ended. So, what actually happened?

Just when Chiles was happy about her medal, Romanian athletes Ana Bărbosu and Sabrina Voinea protested the decision, which forced the Romanian Gymnastics Federation to make an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing the inquiry was submitted four seconds after the FIG’s one-minute deadline.

After hearing the appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, stripping Jordan Chiles of the bronze medal and awarding it to Ana Bărbosu. The American athletes were furious after the fiasco, as video evidence clearly showed that the coach verbally filed the appeal at 47 seconds. However, the CAS based its decision on a delayed system timestamp, forcing Chiles to return her medal.

The reversal sparked outrage across the sport. Footage from “Simone Biles Rising” supported Jordan Chiles’ claim, showing the inquiry was on time. Simone Biles and the entire Team USA backed their teammate against the injustice, slamming the body for making this an issue of nationalism. Her battle for the bronze still continues as Chiles has taken the fight to Switzerland’s highest court, hoping to overturn the decision.

The outcome remains uncertain, but her battle against the biggest sports body has exposed cracks in the system. As she reminded everyone about her fight, the community once again came out in support of her.

Fans come in support of Jordan Chiles as she reminisces about her Olympic struggles

Starting off, one of the fans reminded us about how Simone Biles made an epic salute defying the judges, “Simone’s 5-minute salute made the day epic.” It was during the floor exercise final. Biles finished her routine and held her arms up for an unusually long time, her smile fixed, clearly making a point to the judges, a response to what she felt was an unfair deduction for a short salute after her beam final routine.

Another shared their sincere thoughts, saying that in their eyes, she is the true champion: “You are the bronze medalist.”

Another user emphasized that they don’t care what the legalities say—Chiles is the original bronze medalist, “I don’t really care what they say, you won the bronze medal fair and square.”

Furthermore, one added, “We only acknowledge the medals given on THAT day and moment in time.”
