Last year, when Carlos Yulo won two Olympic golds (in floor exercise and vault) in Paris, he became the center of the spotlight, as he became the first Filipino man to win an Olympic title. But then came silence. He shut himself up for around 10 months before entering the 2025 Asian Championships at Jecheon. And now, he has come forth with an announcement.

During an interview with the Federation Internationale De Gymnastique, in August 2025, Carlos Yulo shared an interesting musing. He wondered, “I won [Floor Exercise and Men’s Vault], but at the same time [I was thinking] how could I beat that result in the next cycle?” Of course, winning two Olympic golds at Paris 2024 was a highlight moment in Yulo’s career. But now, he has to push past that win.

He is currently aiming for wins at the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta. The Olympian, keeping the future of his career in mind, announced, “Right now I’m really focusing on doing All-Arounds at the same time as doing Vault and Floor.” After about 14 months, he’ll be shifting to the all-around event, not just his signature vault or floor. And to compete against him, top contenders like Oka Shinnosuke, Hashimoto Daiki, Zhang Boheng, and others will grace the gymnasium. But Yulo isn’t just returning; he’s evolving.

Yulo has to show the world that his Olympic double gold wasn’t a fluke. He’s still 25 years old and still has a lot to show the world. And that’s why he opted to go silent for 10 months.

Understanding Carlos Yulo’s hiatus following the 2024 Paris Olympics

Yulo wasn’t even active on social media! And after 10 months, he let his fans know what had been going on with him via an Instagram post. Hinting at silent growth, the Filipino Olympic gold medalist wrote, “A lot can happen in that kind of silence, so does growth. All I prayed for coming into this competition is just to be healthy, steady and get through it safely… but God gave me so much more than I ever wished for.”

Of course, things weren’t easy for Carlos Yulo. Following the Olympic win, he got loaded with gifts from his countrypeople. Cash bonuses, ramen, mac-n-cheese, a condo, and surprisingly free colonoscopies. It was as if the attention was a bit too much for Yulo. He had to take some time off to heal, recalibrate, and take care of his turbulences in his life away from the mat.
