

The Tokyo Olympics have dawned on us and Team USA has already started fancying its chances at getting medals. The contingent itself is the second-largest ever sent by the United States. It comprises highly trained athletes, many of whom are gold medal favourites in their respective sports.

While the nation cheered them on, former First Lady of the USA Michelle Obama sent a special message to athletes, giving them that much-needed push ahead of the Games.

“I know how hard all of the athletes on Team USA have worked to make it to the Olympics in Tokyo,” she wrote. “And I can’t wait to cheer them on! I’m so proud of each and every competitor who has worked so hard for this moment. We’re rooting for you!”

Neil deGrasse Tyson praised Japan for hosting the Olympics
Japan had a hard time organising, let alone hosting the Tokyo Games this year. After rising out of the pandemic, a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases over the past month forced the government to declare a state of emergency and make the painful decision to host the Olympics without live spectators.

Neil deGrasse Tyson took to Twitter to laud the country for taking this bold step even in the face of a pandemic. He wrote, “The Opening Ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics, with 206 countries, has salvaged and celebrated whatever dignity remains in this World after 18-months of viral invasion, fear, ignorance, hatred, and loss. Thank you Japan.”

Athletes were hoping for that mental edge that crowd support can fuel. But it seems as if they will have to compete in silence. However, this is not too different from their training sessions over the lockdown period.

It will truly be a test of mentality for athletes and these are times where one must show their mettle. As the Tokyo Olympics go on, we will see who steps up to the challenge.
