The MLS has witnessed remarkable growth over the past few years. Among the league’s milestones was the much-anticipated arrival of Lionel Messi, whose presence elevated the league’s profile and ignited a surge of interest. However, concerns have been raised about the impact his exit could have, with fears of losing the upward trajectory he brought. But Commissioner Don Garber has a compelling hypothesis that proves why Messi’s exit might not have a major impact on the MLS’ future. 

As per journalist Favian Renkel, the Commissioner recently cited an example of the recent league match between Charlotte FC and New York City when asked how they will use the Inter Miami star’s momentum to keep fans hooked on the MLS. Garber said, “I was in Charlotte yesterday with 65,000 people and Messi was not playing.” It looks like Garber’s aim is to continue to draw huge spectatorship for further years in the absence of Messi. While it would be interesting to see how Garber and Co. do that, there’s one party that may suffer.  

It’s no secret that Inter Miami has been the one who is majorly profiting in the name of the 8X Ballon d’Or winner in all aspects. Hence, the exit of Messi will surely bring a dip for the Herons. Nevertheless, there’s still time for David Beckham’s soccer franchise to think about life after Messi. For now, they shall focus on reaping the benefits of the World Cup winner’s presence. However, it looks like Garber isn’t worried, even if Messi departs. This comes after he recently highlighted the key catalyst that transpired in Lionel Messi’s move to Fort Lauderdale.

Recently, Don Garber delved into the dynamics of the league’s evolution, reflecting on David Beckham‘s impact during his time as a player and his influence on Messi’s potential arrival. In an intriguing revelation, Garber suggested that without Beckham’s entry into the league back in 2007, Lionel Messi’s presence in the MLS would be improbable. Garber further added that Becks’ 2007 transfer set a statement that MLS can be a choice of ‘well-known players in the world.’

Garber further noted that despite Beckham facing initial challenges with the LA Galaxy, those obstacles ultimately contributed to the former Manchester United icon’s successful transition into an MLS team owner. “I can’t imagine what MLS would be like if David didn’t make that decision,” said Garber. However, now Beckham won’t stand alone as the MLS’ compelling factor. In the future, big names are certain to join the league due to the presence of Messi.
