The ability of Cristiano Ronaldo is staggering. Since he left Manchester United after various issues, the Portuguese sensation left for Saudi Arabia to sign a bumper contract, and fans loved that move. He earns around $250 million per year and is one of the highest-paid sports athletes in the world.
He arrived at the club this January to help the team to win the Saudi Pro League. But things have not been easy for the soccer club. Yet, the influence he had on players is eye-opening. Many predict the Saudi league to match the MLS in terms of popularity and quality. Yet, there are concerns regarding the stars that come to the country.
However, Roel Coumans, head coach of the Saudi Professional League club Abha, is concerned about the league’s future. Like all leagues, there are rules and regulations in place. The coach highlighted potential issues, which now pose a problem.

The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo helps the league but has a twist!
According to Al Jazeera, Coumans explained the issues related to stars arriving at the league. He mentioned, “If you want to be in the top five, then you need these kinds of stars, but you also have to look at the development of Saudi football. The young players will learn from the big stars, but if they are not playing every week, then they can’t develop as they wish.” Hence, it is a point to be noted because of the upcoming rule changes for next season.
The number of foreigners increased from seven to eight in the team from next season. This move can hurt the Saudi players, as Coumans pointed out. In every league, there is a home-grown rule where the number of players needed from that country to create a squad. They keep this rule to give the other players a chance to showcase their skills. The league’s quality would improve if they don’t violate this rule, but the players of the nation would not get a platform to showcase their talents.
