Erling Haaland could consider himself a bit unlucky, after a spell-binding debut season at the Etihad was not enough to beat Lionel Messi for the 2023 Ballon d’Or. A Chelsea icon, however, assures that Haaland will eventually win the award, given that he waits.
Haaland’s surreal performances, along with PSG’s early exit from the UEFA Champions League, ate away at a portion of Messi’s credibility to deserve the award. Speculations and arguments aside, it came as no surprise that the Ballon d’Or preferred the World Cup winner.

Many pundits were divided regarding the former Barcelona star’s 8th trophy win. Others backed Lionel Messi to win it, given France Football’s affinity for international trophies. Formerly Chelsea’s Joe Cole also agrees. He claims that, after watching his [Messi’s] goal against Mexico, Cole was sure that he would win the World Cup for Argentina, and also likely the Ballon d’Or.
He said, “He was like an animal prowling and picking up position, and then went back and smashed it in the bottom corner. And from that moment on, I said in my head, they’re gonna win this World Cup.”

Messi won the Golden Boot after scoring seven goals and providing three assists in the tournament. But his crucial goal against Mexico set the tone for the rest of the tournament. The number 10’s magical assists against the Netherlands and Croatia were symbols of the star’s contributions other than just putting the ball at the back of the net. Meanwhile, Cole also assured that Haaland would eventually win the award.

The Norwegian striker’s performances were as good as it gets. The star scored 52 goals for Manchester City, guiding them to the treble. Breaking multiple records, Haaland proved his potential, and Cole is sure that he will be rewarded someday. But all he asks of him is to wait.
