Kylian Mbappe is a gifted soccer player who by many is considered a generational talent. The French sensation at just 24 years of age has tasted success at both club and International levels. The forward is also among the few to have tasted World Cup glory. However, along with these achievements, Mbappe is also somewhat of a controversial figure.

His statement a few months ago about the South American soccer teams, particularly Argentina and Brazil, facing less competition compared to European football, has come back to haunt him. The French stars dig at his PSG teammates, Lionel Messi and Neymar‘s teams seem to have seen defeat.

The statement in question was made by Mbappe in May last year. At the time teams around the world were preparing for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, including Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Neymar’s Brazil. Kylian Mbappe made some bold claims and then talked about how the level of soccer in South America was inferior to that of Europe.

In his words, “Argentina and Brazil don’t play games at a high level to get to the World Cup. Football is not as advanced as it is in Europe and it shows when you watch the last World Cups”. This statement unsurprisingly generated a huge buzz on social media. Kylian Mbappe’s statement appeared to have been jarring for South American soccer fans who saw it as an attempt to downplay their achievements.

However, it seems that his statement has not yielded any results regarding European domination. On the contrary, South American teams have shown impressive performances in various international soccer tournaments, proving Mbappe wrong.

So far it seems like South American nations are dominating in all major tournaments. Lionel Messi and Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup Finals was a clear indication of the South American soccer team’s prowess in the sport.

Alongside this, Brazil is the reigning champion of both the U17 World Cup (2019) and the Olympics (2020). Now the recent victory of Uruguay has further slammed Mbappe’s claim. On Sunday, Uruguay defeated Italy 1-0 to win the U20 World Cup as another testament to South America’s soccer excellence.
