Belinda Bencic Backs Novak Djokovic’s US Open 2020 Resistance

The tennis tour is about to restart in mid-August with the Citi Open in Washington D.C. and then followed by the US Open. Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams has announced her appearance in the New York major this year, also many American players have shown positive response. However reigning semifinalist at US Open, Belinda Bencic is skeptical about traveling to the US this year.
Previously Novak Djokovic, Simona Halep, and Ashleigh Barty showed their disinterests in playing at US Open 2020 since it’s not safe to travel to the US.
Former World Number four Bencic dethroned defending champion Naomi Osaka at US Open 2019. Then she made her career-best run at a Slam by reaching the semifinals of the American Major.

“I’m still considering what I think about the US Open,” Bencic addressed Keystone-SDA. “For the less well-ranked players who have not earned anything for a long time, it is very good to be able to compete again. You can’t lie around the hotel for 18 hours and then get a top performance on the pitch. It is important to be able to lift your head.”

“I tried to stay positive despite all the bad news. But it was a strange feeling that I didn’t have a real goal. I wanted to train, but I didn’t know why,” she added.
