Going into the Olympics, Romain Cannone was not even close to being the favorite to win the Individual Epee event. He went into the event ranked World No. 47 and walked out with the gold.?

The French Epee fencer is relatively younger than the rest of the competition at 24. He also has less experience and titles to his name. He has been around the World No. 47 rank since 2018 and has not won any international titles.?

This was his first international medal, and boy, what a medal to win! In the Semi-finals, Cannone beat Igor Reizlin of Ukraine 15-10 to advance to the finals. He then beat Gergely Siklosi of Hungary in the finals with a score of 15-10 to win the gold.?

Siklosi himself is a young fencer, but unlike Cannone, he?s been consistently placing in the top rankings after winning the World Championship Gold in Epee in 2019. He struggled to find a podium despite placing well in World Cups after that.?

This silver medal will cement his status as one of the up-and-coming Epee Fencers in today?s era.
