Colby Covington and Khabib Nurmagomedov, it’s very unlikely that these two are going to cross paths in the near future. Khabib has been dominating the lightweight division ever since he made his appearance in the octagon. 

On the other hand, Colby Covington is one of the best fighters in the welterweight division. He came close to capturing the welterweight title when he took on the welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman. But, ever since the humbling loss to Usman, Covington has been away from the sport. 

However, the chaos appeared in a strength and conditioning session with Cameron R. Hanes and shared his thoughts about a few potential fights in UFC. When asked about Khabib Nurmagomedov, Covington seemed interested in a showdown with the lightweight champion.

Colby Covington: Khabib nurmagomedov Can’t Take Me Down

Khabib Nurmagomedov has been dominating his opponents at the lightweight division with his superior grappling skills. Conor McGregor showed some good wrestling skills against Khabib in the first encounter and Al Iaquinta stopped Khabib from taking him down in the championship rounds. However, Khabib just dominated opponents such as Dustin Poirier, Edson Barboza, and Michael Johnson on the ground.

Well, things won’t be the same if Khabib takes on Covington who has some excellent wrestling pedigree. Covington believes that Khabib won’t be able to take him down and it would end up being a striking battle. Covington explained:

“That (a fight with Khabib)would be cool. Cause he has been fighting a lot of fighters at lightweight they don’t know how to wrestle. I have always known it would be a good matchup for me. It would be a striking battle. He is not gonna take me down.”

Covington also made fun of Khabib’s sambo background by saying: “If wrestling were easy it would be called Sambo,”

Who is Next for Covington

Colby Covington has been away from the sport since UFC 245. He suffered a broken jaw during the fight, but it seems he is back in the training and is healed up. However, there has been no news on his next opponent. Michael Chiesa called out Covington after a dominant performance at UFC Fight Night 166 over Rafael Dos Anjos.

It would be intriguing to see whether Covington accepts the callout from Chiesa or wait to fight the winner of Leon Edwards vs Tyron Woodly. Edwards has claimed that he is getting the title shot next if he gets past former champion, Woodley. However, if Woodley wins the fight then maybe the long anticipated grudge match with Covington would make more sense.
