Jon Jones made a triumphant return to the octagon at UFC 285. He made quick work of Ciryl Gane in under three minutes of the opening round by defeating him via a guillotine submission. ‘Bones’ made a big statement after a 3-year hiatus. However, he hinted at a possible retirement despite his dominant comeback victory. UFC analyst and critic Chael Sonnen gave his take on the situation.
Jones successfully captured the UFC heavyweight title in his first-ever match in the division. Many top fighters and celebrities came to witness his return in one of the most stacked fight cards of this year. However, during the post-fight press conference, he answered a reporter’s question about a possible retirement.

He claimed that he had at least one more fight in him and he wants to give fans that fight. But he didn’t add anything else on that matter. However, Jones‘ former rival Chael Sonnen analyzed the situation and discussed about it in a recent video on his YouTube channel.
Chael Sonnen doesn’t believe Jon Jones will retire soon
‘The American Gangster’ mentioned that one of his friends told him about a statement that said ‘Bones’ would soon retire. He said, “He [his friend Ryan] read me a quote along the vein of Jon Jones’ career soon to be over.”
Sonnen added, “It wasn’t because USADA got him [Jones]. It wasn’t because he made enough money or had enough memories. He beat everybody and there’s nothing left to prove.”
Sonnen mentioned that he ignored the news at first. He said, “The reason I ignored this yesterday is because I understand that Jon Jones is not fighting for the championship. But he’s not fighting for the legacy …but if the money doesn’t (exist), he doesn’t. He’s fitting for the money.”

He then took the example of Floyd Mayweather and claimed that he was doing the same thing as ‘Bones’. “Floyd Mayweather is doing the same thing, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” said the former MMA fighter.
The 29-14-1 record holder doesn’t believe that there is anything wrong with fighting to earn more money. He said, “If a guy is gonna leave a sport, the last reason he generally leaves, particularly combat, is because he wants to.” Sonnen mentions that he dismissed Jon Jones‘ retirement rumors because there’s still money to be made.
However, it is pertinent to note that Jon Jones himself hasn’t provided any update on this rumor or why he said that he had only one more fight left in him. UFC and MMA fans will have to wait and see if that rumor ever comes to fruition.
