UFC 280 went down on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi last night. UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling retained his title after a win over former champion T.J. Dillashaw. Among the star-studded audience who saw Sterling’s performance was Hollywood actor Steven Seagal. UFC commentator Joe Rogan and Sterling once had an interesting conversation about Seagal on Rogan’s podcast.

Back in 2019, Aljamain Sterling made an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan and Sterling had a fun conversation during which they discussed the Aikido skills of Steven Seagal.

Joe Rogan says Steven Seagal’s Aikido is 100% legitimate

During their conversation, Rogan told Sterling that Steven Seagal was a legit Aikido specialist. Rogan pointed out that people did not take Seagal seriously because what he did appeared to be silly.

“He was the first American to ever teach at a dojo in Japan, speaks fluent Japanese and he’s a legit Aikido master. Like 100% absolutely legitimate Aikido master.” Rogan further added, “The thing is that Aikido is just not something that translates perfectly to MMA.” Sterling said that he would discredit everything based on the parody of Seagal that was circulating around.

Rogan showed Sterling a clip of a younger Steven Seagal teaching at a dojo. He said, “Aikido’s not the best martial art for self-defense. It’s just not. But it has its applications. And in its applications, he’s a master at it… If you know the other stuff, this motherf*cker has some real sh*t… He’s outstanding. His Aikido is outstanding. The real question is, how effective is Aikido?”

Sterling agreed to what Rogan said. However, he said that it was hard for him to get past the joke part about Steven Seagal’s martial arts techniques.

He also agreed that Seagal’s antics make people overlook his martial arts skill.

Rogan told Sterling about teaching GSP the turning sidekick

After talking about Steven Seagal, Joe Rogan told Aljamain Sterling about the time he taught UFC legend Georges St-Pierre, the turning sidekick. Rogan said that he felt embarrassed about teaching an expert like St-Pierre because he felt he was just a comedian and a commentator.

Rogan retold the story of how he told St-Pierre about his martial arts background. He also mentioned how GSP was taken aback after seeing Rogan’s technique. Rogan said that he has no illusions about besting GSP in a martial arts contest. He said that he just had one technique he could do better than GSP. Rogan added that Steven Seagal lacked this self-awareness. He said that’s the reason people don’t take him seriously.
