Jorge Masvidal is set to rematch Kamaru Usman at UFC 261. ‘Gamebred’ has been granted another shot at the title despite not fighting since his UFC 251 loss to ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. But Masvidal’s former opponent Ben Askren doesn’t think the Miami native deserved the shot.

‘Funky’ believes that Masvidal’s former training partner Colby Covington deserved the opportunity more than the BMF. ‘Chaos’ fought Usman at UFC 245 and had a very competitive fight. He got finished in the last moments of the final round, but the fight was evenly matched until then.

Referring to that Askren said, “Yeah, I didn’t think it made a whole lot of sense. He, he hasn’t won since the last Usman loss.

Colby actually has and then, but just more, more than anything is it wasn’t competitive. He lost 50 to 45 I think some people because they like him, they want to try to remember it differently. But he lost every single round to those convincing enough that the judges went 10-8. Colby was 2 to 2 going into the fifth round with Usman and then he got knocked out,” Askren added.

Askren also predicted how the rematch between Masvidal and Usman will play out. The former ONE Championship and Bellator MMA welterweight champion believes that Usman will get it done again. “I mean, there’s obviously the factor of a Jorge could get a knockout, but I think probably most days Usman wins,” he added.

Both fighters will have a better assessment of their opponent having already fought once. The UFC’s BMF champion, Masvidal, stepped in on 6 days’ notice at UFC 251, but he will have a full training camp at his disposal this term. That might be a factor in the fight.

But the champion will also know what to expect from his counterpart and will look to better his dominant performance the last term. However, with a striker like Masvidal, the possibility of him earning a knockout always is there. Nevertheless, fans are in for a show at the UFC 261 main event.
