The showdown between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier for the lightweight championship at UFC 269 produced one of the most exciting matches in the promotion’s history. Much to the disappointment of Poirier, the Brazilian fighter came out on top and registered his first title defense. Further, the back-and-forth match cemented the Brazilian fighter’s position at the top of the division. On the other hand, the undisputed title once again eluded ‘Diamond’ as he failed to grab the opportunity.
However, both fighters experienced a stark contrast in fortunes next as ‘do Bronx’ was stripped out of his title after missing out weight ahead of his fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. Meanwhile, the American fighter again produced a fight laded with fireworks against Michael Chandler and, with a win against ‘Iron,’ again threw his name into the top contender’s mix. While it has been over a year since Poirier and Oliveira clashed, the fight is still afresh in the minds of the fans.

Poirier initially controlled the fight’s momentum and even rocked Oliviera on multiple occasions in the first round. However, the momentum slightly shifted towards the end of the round. The BJJ ace picked up pace in the second one but also took powerful blows from Poirier. However, Guaruja-native turned the tides in his favor when he clinched Poirier’s gloves in a takedown which threw off Poirier.
Afterward, in the third round, the 33-9-1 record holder transitioned to a rear-necked and made Poirier tap out.
The 33-year-old replied to the clip and admitted he was on the cusp of defeat at the hands of the tougher opponent. Thus, he wrote, “Diamond is tough like nails, he nearly got me.”
The former UFC champion’s generous comment resulted in fans lauding the fighter for his humble outlook.
How did the fans react to Oliviera’s comments?
