UFC’s welterweight division has become as unpredictable as a Christopher Nolan movie. Exceptional talents fill the division from top to bottom. From undefeated fighters like Shavkat Rakhmonov to pioneers like Kamaru Usman, the 170 lb category has a room full of surprises to offer. Ever since Leon Edwards unexpectedly won the UFC welterweight title from Usman, fans have been waiting to see who will challenge for the title next.

Almost all of the top 10 ranked welterweights have been part of the discussion for the next title challenger. However, neither the UFC fight makers nor the fans have reached a definite conclusion to the answer. Although when Edwards faced Usman at UFC 286, Dana White announced Colby Covington as the next title challenger. This news did not fit well with other deserving candidates, like Belal Muhammad.

Belal Muhammad plans to hijack the title shot from Colby Covington

Ever since Dana White’s announcement, Muhammad has called out both White and Covington for this. Sitting at the 4th spot in UFC welterweight rankings, Muhammad believes that he deserves a title shot. Belal Muhammad is going to face Gilbert Burns this weekend at UFC 288. Dana White stated that he is going to give a title shot to the winner of this fight.

However, it is not clear when the winner will get a title shot. Covington might still be the one who gets the next shot against Edwards. Then, it might be the case that winner of Covington vs Edwards fight faces the winner of the Burns vs Muhammad fight.

“I think if I put on a great performance this weekend, get a tremendous finish or something. They’re going to Abu Dhabi. You think you’re gonna have Leon fight Colby in Abu Dhabi? Nah! You’re gonna have me fighting (in) Abu Dhabi and it’ll be like a dream come true. I think that’ll be like how the story is supposed to be read.”

According to Muhammad, putting up a dominant performance against Burns can push him ahead of Covington in the title race.
