After reversing the wave of Alex Pereira‘s dominance in their long-standing rivalry at UFC 285, Israel Adesanya reclaimed the UFC middleweight championship title. Following this monumental victory, the promotional frontman Dana White made an exciting announcement, that ‘The Last Stylebender’ would be headlining the next pay-per-view event in Sydney, Australia in September.
As anticipation builds, the frontrunner opponent for the New Zealander on the card is expected to be the winner of the highly anticipated bout between Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis, which will serve as the headlining fight for UFC 290 in July.
However, there is a twist in the tale. Another former opponent of Adesanya is also eyeing a rematch with him on Australian soil. With such a quick turnaround time for the victor of Whittaker vs. du Plessis, doubts arise regarding either man appearing on the September card. This is where we encounter another middleweight contender, ready to pack his bags and take up the challenge against Adesanya for the title.

Eyes on Israel Adesanya, the middleweight title, and Sydney
‘The Killa Gorilla’ Jared Cannonier is on a mission to secure a prime spot in the UFC 293 main card fight against Israel Adesanya. These two clashed back in July 2022 for the middleweight title, where ‘The Last Stylebender’ successfully defended his belt for the sixth time, via a unanimous decision victory.
The ranked 4th middleweight has previously made his case for the title shot, too. And during a recent interview with MiddleEasy, Cannonier once again declared his readiness, stating, “I am getting ready. I will definitely be ready to fight in Sydney. My passport is up to date, my bags will be packed, and the way I plan on performing- Yeah, I’m definitely gonna be ready to step in and make it happen… But who knows?”

The 39-year-old fighter also discussed another scenario, stating, “There’s talks of him going up to light heavyweight and doing the champ-champ thing again. So who knows, you know. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, you know… Either he goes up to light heavyweight and fights Jamahal[Hill] out there, or they have no choice but to put me in there because I’m definitely calling for it after I put Marvin’s lights out.”
With his eyes firmly fixed on the middleweight title, ‘The Killa Gorilla’ must first overcome the challenge posed by Marvin Vettori at UFC on ESPN 47 in Las Vegas on July 17.
