Conor McGregor gets a reminder of his infamous loss against ‘The Eagle’
In the realm of intense UFC rivalries, McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov stands out. While the Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones feud also captivated fans, many argue that McGregor and Nurmagomedov’s animosity was unparalleled.
After the infamous bus attack, Khabib Nurmagomedov went on to win the vacant lightweight belt at UFC 223. McGregor was chosen for his first title defense, and in the lead-up to the fight, he spared no one with his trash talk. He targeted Nurmagomedov’s religion, country, family, and team. In contrast, the Dagestani fighter remained eerily calm.
However, when the fight night arrived, chaos erupted. Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated Conor McGregor for four rounds, ultimately forcing him to submit. Despite the clear victory, ‘The Eagle’ couldn’t contain his anger. He leaped over the cage and attacked McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. This post-fight brawl became a defining moment in UFC history, with the event setting a record with 2.4 million pay-per-view buys, the highest in the company’s history at the time.

In the Instagram story, Makhachev shared a picture of Khabib after the victory pointing at someone outside the cage. While McGregor can be seen sitting against the cage in the background. Makhachev captioned the post, “Just like this picture.”
Although Nurmagomedov later apologized to Las Vegas and the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he refused to fight in the state after the incident. The Commission imposed a nine-month suspension and a $500,000 fine on him. He also went on to defend his belt twice more before retiring with an undefeated record of 29-0 after his last bout against Justin Gaethje in 2020.
McGregor’s reaction to the loss revealed
However, what many didn’t see was Conor McGregor’s immediate reaction, now featured in his Netflix documentary, “McGregor Forever.” A clip from the documentary has circulated online, revealing McGregor’s visible distress as Bruce Buffer announced the official decision.
UFC CEO Dana White approached McGregor, discussing the post-fight brawl. McGregor, at the time, seemed more concerned about the loss than the unexpected attack.

“I don’t give a f**k about that. I don’t give a bollocks about that. Those were handbags,” McGregor stated firmly. White, seemingly surprised, mentioned he didn’t witness Nurmagomedov’s leap from the cage. However, McGregor remained distraught about the loss. “Who cares about that? That’s handbags. I was beaten, and that’s it. I was beaten where it mattered, and that’s all that matters. Who cares about all that other stuff?”
In conclusion, the rivalry between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov remains one of UFC history’s most intense and unforgettable chapters. Despite the years that have passed since their epic showdown, the animosity between their camps continues to smolder, leaving an indelible mark on the world of mixed martial arts.
