Joe Rogan has never failed to entertain and intrigue the mind of his listeners in his career as a podcaster and a commentator. His opinions are largely popular among many and especially his takes on any MMA-related subject. One topic that Rogan has always been very vocal about is the downward elbow rule or the 12-6 elbow rule. The 55-year-old has on multiple occasions called out on the ridiculousness of it which doesn’t allow a fighter to throw his elbows in a straight downward direction.

One of the major contributions to Rogan’s anger at the rule was especially because of the Jon Jones vs Matt Hamill fight, which ended in a DQ for Jones. Interestingly, UFC president Dana White even confided to have tried overturning that decision with the Nevada athletic commission.

Joe Rogan on why the downward elbow rule is dumb according to him

While discussing the potential GOATs of MMA, Rogan named Jon Jones among a few others like Khabib Nurmagomedov and GSP as front runners for the best MMA athlete of all time. As he talked about Jones, he called Jones’s singular loss against Matt Hamill a ‘Bu*****t loss’, blaming the decision on the downward elbow rule.

In JRE episode #1915, Rogan said, “Jon jones has one loss and it’s a b******* loss. He destroyed the dude, but he was hitting him with downward elbows, which is the dumbest f*cking rule in the game. The absolute dumbest rule in the game,” exclaimed Rogan.

UFC president Dana White also shared the same sentiment as Joe Rogan. In an interview with Brett Okamoto, White, while talking about Jones and his legacy, said, “Think of all the things that he was doing during the time that he was fighting and still nobody beat him. I’ve battled hard to try to get that one taken off the back of his record. It’s impossible to do which is insane. It’s crazy that that thing doesn’t go away.”

He clearly seemed discontent with the idea of Jones having a loss on his record due to the downward elbow rule.

The 53-year-old UFC president also confided that he tried overturning the decision with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to no avail. “So far no good I mean I’ve really really worked hard to try to get that one taken off his record but not looking good” stated Dana.

Rogan narrates how the rule was put in place initially

During his discussion with fellow comedian Brian Simpson, Rogan recalled the initial implementation of the downward elbow rule. The long-time UFC commentator found the rule extremely absurd and didn’t hold back from calling the people who implemented it as ignorant.

“The reason why it was made illegal is so stupid. It has to do with people being ignorant way back in the early days of MMA. They could break bricks with it on TV so you can’t have it on the octagon, it’s too dangerous. That’s how Big John McCarthy talks about it.” claimed Rogan.

Rogan clearly believes that the downward elbow rule can be done with. Considering that Dana White also seems to be on the same page, especially on the topic of Jon Jones’s DQ loss, maybe we can see the controversial rule being removed or modified in the future.

What do you think about this rule? Should fighters be allowed to use straight downward elbows on their opponents or is it more dangerous than other strikes? Let us know in the comments.
