Getting knocked out cold is a feeling that only people who have set foot inside a boxing or any striking gym would recognize. While it is quite common for fighters to get dropped or knocked out clean, what happened in a supposedly Russian promotion left fans bewildered. In a now-viral clip doing the rounds on Twitter, a fighter was seen getting KO’d by his opponent, which was followed by him trying to take down the referee in a sheer moment of confusion. Since it takes a while for an individual to get back to their senses after getting dropped, the fighter instinctively tried to wrestle with the referee as the crowd watched on. What followed was even more baffling, as the official, in an attempt to defend himself, ended up choking the fighter in a tight guillotine.
Netizens on Twitter were naturally quick to jump on the clip. While some claimed that the official should have avoided choking, others hilariously pointed out that the fighter had lost two fights in a row in a matter of seconds.

The reactions on Twitter to this sequence were quite hysterical. Some tweets criticized the ref while others had a field day at the expense of the losing fighter. Let’s take a look at some of the reactions that stood out.

One of the first tweets was from an individual who clearly saw fault in the referee

On the other hand, there were quite a few who felt that the referee did a good job, even claiming he should have got a win bonus.
Bro that’s crazy, I think the ref deserves a win bonus also lmao #MMATwitter https://t.co/lrUZyQxTzH

Another funny tweet claimed that both moves should cancel out any damage to the fighter.
Should have no effects. Getting knocked out then choked out immediately after eachother.

Another tweet just stated that the guy got KO’d and submitted all at one fight

One MMA fan also displayed his keen observation as he pointed out the sequence that landed the right hand.
That takedown feint at the beginning was nasty. Super fast and then came upstairs. Ref didn't need to do my man that dirty tho! lol

Although someone was sensible enough to point out how the choke would have caused more damage to the fighter.
stopping all blood flow to brain after being concussed? hope someone caught him outside after the event. guy was in on a takedown he wasn’t even threatening him and had no idea where he was

Someone even tagged UFC fighter Kelvin Gastelum in one of the tweets.
@KelvinGastelum tough day at the office for this vato taking 2 L's https://t.co/lwuEgM2Im5

Throughout the history of modern MMA, there have been quite a few instances when fighters voluntarily or involuntarily got into a fight with the official
History of incidents when fighters attacked officials
One of the more recent ones took place when Conor McGregor got into an altercation with referee Marc Goddard. The incident occurred at Bellator 187 after the Irishman jumped into the cage to celebrate his teammate’s victory.

Another fight similar to the viral clip happened with fighter Joseph Nehm. Nehm, after getting rattled in a fight, ended up taking down the official and even succeeded in taking his back as he almost choked the official out. Luckily, he was stopped and, upon coming back to his senses, apologized to the ref.

Unfortunately for MMA fighters, getting knocked out is part of the job and officials have to ensure that they don’t take more damage than necessary. Although there have been certain cases where fighters also end up losing their lives. In the case of the clip, the ref could have chosen to defend himself more wisely instead of choking out an already rattled fighter.
