UFC’s President Dana White is an amazing businessman. This is evident from the way he has led the promotion and how much it has grown over time.

Dana White was trying to set up UFC when there weren’t many fans and people did not know much about MMA. However, boxing was quite popular back then. Hence, it took time for MMA to win people over and establish itself, and UFC played a huge role in making this happen.

In an interview, White spoke about the early days of the promotion. He also revealed the first mistake he made while trying to establish UFC which cost him a lot of money.

White explained that he wanted to buy ufc.com as it was already being used by ‘User-Friendly Computers’. However, White felt they were asking too much money, and he ended up not buying it. Because of this decision, he had to shell out more money ultimately.

White said, “When we were trying to get ufc.com, User-Friendly Computers owned ufc.com. So I called the guy…. This was my first business mistake that I ever made. So I wanted to buy it and he wanted something like 15,000 dollars for it. I freaked out. ‘Are you out of your mind?’ This that everything else. So I don’t buy it.”

“Everyone was going there [ufc.com] by accident, looking for UFC even though, you know, the UFC wasn’t even that big then. So you can imagine what happened. I get into a huge fight with this guy, I don’t buy it for 15,000. The UFC starts going like this (upward trajectory), so User-Friendly, ufc.com goes like this.”

“I ended up paying, I want to say, 50 to 75,000 for it when I could have bought it for 15,000. Yeah, that was one of my first big mistakes,” said Dana in the interview.

Has Dana White made any other business mistakes?

One mistake that MMA fans talk about is White not getting Fedor Emelianenko on board with UFC. Emelianenko entering UFC’s heavyweight could have caused a huge storm; in the heavyweight division and also in monetary terms.
