UFC star Conor McGregor always seems to find controversy or rather controversy finds him every time. The former UFC champion takes a lot of pride in his Irish identity. Further, he recently voiced his support for Ireland’s women’s football team as they were singing a song that references the IRA in a celebratory video.

In the circulated video, the football team is singing “Ooh ah, up the ‘RA” from the song Celtic Symphony by Wolfe Tones. The supporters of the IRA have had a long association with the song and therefore it’s usually seen with skepticism. As a result, the dressing room’s celebratory video met with disapproval.

Conor McGregor took to Twitter to post an edited video as a response. In the video, Sky Sports presenter Rob Wotton reported the news of the team members’ apology. However, the Dublin-born is not apologetic and is staying true to his brash nature. In fact, a rather infamous McGregor statement followed the clip.

How Conor McGregor expressed his support?

The former UFC champion captioned the edited post with “Congrats Ladies” as the football team progressed to the World Cup qualifiers’ finals. A love heart emoji and Irish flag emoji followed the congratulatory text.

The UEFA investigation and the apology

After the live video went viral, the UEFA promised to launch an investigation for “potential inappropriate behavior”. Instead of celebrating the historic moment, the undesired publicity has dampened the mood of the team.

The UEFA ethics and the disciplinary inspector will investigate the issue. And later on, he will decide whether the aftermath of the October 11 qualifier will attract a disciplinary charge.

The Football Association of Ireland issued an immediate apology. The FAI said that they “apologize for any offense caused by a song sung by players in the dressing room.”

The Defender Jamie Finn confessed that the team was sorry for a “lapse in judgment” on their part. Whereas the manager, Vera Pauw, apologized to everyone whom the team offended because of their celebration. Therefore, she said, “We apologize from the bottom of our hearts.”

However, the forward Aine O’Gorman felt dreadful about how the viral footage. Thus she said, “We would just like to apologize to anyone who was offended.”

After winning the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup qualifiers play-off against Scotland, Ireland’s women’s football team has secured a berth in next year’s biggest tournament. The 2023 Women’s WC will be held from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
