Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and the former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor clashed three years ago at UFC 229 on 6 October 2018. Here, we look at the top 5 best moments featuring the pair.

1. Khabib Nurmagomedov calls out Conor McGregor

On 12 November 2016 at UFC 205, ‘The Eagle’ claimed a spectacular submission victory over Michael Johnson. In the octagon interview, Nurmagomedov called out McGregor and uttered the most memorable lines ever spoken in the UFC.

‘The Eagle’ said – “Your guy, at the beginning of the year, he tap like chicken. End of the year, he fights for the title crazy! Hey, you know this is true this is not trash talking. Hey guys, Irish only 6 million, Russia 150 million.”

2 ‘The Eagle’ and ‘The Notorious’- UFC 229 Press Conference

Nurmagomedov claimed the UFC lightweight title by defeating Al Iaquinta by a unanimous decision at UFC 223. After becoming the champion, the fight between him and McGregor finally came to fruition. 

The press conference took place with no live audience. Only the media team was allowed because of the prior altercations between the pair that got McGregor into legal troubles.

In the UFC 229 press conference, a lot of heated arguments took place as McGregor verbally attacked Nurmagomedov on a personal level. UFC fans witnessed one of the best trash talks from McGregor’s side. 

Here are few words that McGregor said – “You wanted a war, here we f***in’ are”….”He’s a glass jaw rat. He’s a glass jaw bum”……”Your last fight was embarrassing. I was sitting in a cell in Brooklyn and laughing at you”.

3. The first face-off

At the UFC 229 press conference, the pair had their first face-off. It was so intense that even the UFC President Dana White was nervous. McGregor, being himself, continued his trash-talking during their face-off.

It was one of the best face-offs that UFC fans had ever witnessed. Not just UFC fans, the entire MMA community was thoroughly entertained and intrigued.

4. Final weigh-ins and face-off

After the press conference, it was time for the pair to officially weigh in and stand face-to-face before UFC 229. ‘The Notorious MMA’ officially weighed in at 154.5 lbs. And ‘The Eagle’ officially weighed in at 155 lbs. 

The pair had another intense face-off. McGregor threw a kick during their final face-off while Nurmagomedov appeared very calm. At the same time, Dana White was screaming, “Don’t touch”, while restraining McGregor.

5. Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor – The Final Showdown

Finally, the time arrived where Nurmagomedov and McGregor stepped inside the octagon at UFC 229. The event took place at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. 

‘The Eagle’ dominated McGregor in the first two rounds, before losing the third. Nurmagomedov took the fight down on the ground, where he had the advantage. Then in the fourth round, Nurmagomedov claimed a spectacular submission (neck crank) over ‘The Notorious’.

Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title for the first time in what would be his greatest victory of all time.
