This was all the more special to Beckham as he had redeemed himself of his mistake at the 1998 World Cup. The English star had received a red card in their group stage game against Argentina in the 1998 tournament.

The team would later lose the match on penalties, and be knocked out of the tournament. Beckham became the pariah for his dismissal at a crucial stage.
