The 2022 Mr. Olympia contest ended with Big Ramy ending in 5th place, a relatively disappointing outcome for the two-time Mr. Olympia. The bodybuilding fraternity has spoken about several factors that coincided with his shocking drop-off. Former retired IFBB pro-King Kamali (Shahriar Kamali) sat down for an interview to decode Big Ramy’s problems this year.
During an interview with Rx Muscle Interview and Jose Raymond, Kamali explained how Big Ramy looked flat because of diuretics. At the end of the competition, Hadi Choopan from Iran won the title, followed by Derek Lunsford and Nick Walker. Yet, the talking point became Big Ramy’s failure to win his third Mr. Olympia title.

King Kamali raises questions on Big Ramy’s performance at Mr. Olympia
Kamali said, “Okay, in Layman’s Terms, it means he took too many diuretics. That’s what it breaks down to. Simple, easy, Japanese-ey. He took too many diuretics, and he could not catch up with them. Now, for those people who don’t understand ‘can’t catch up with it,’ let me explain it to you from a personal experience.”
Significantly, bodybuilders use diuretics to increase urine output and excrete sodium to alter the fluid volume, increase body composition, and present a more aesthetic physique. Kamali explained how eating junk food would not help you get into a better shape after using diuretics.

He continued, “It doesn’t matter if you sit down and eat 16 pizzas and 15 cakes back-to-back when you’re flattening out from diuretics, you’re going to be flat for at least 48 hours. That’s it. There’s no coming back from it. You can’t catch up with it. So, whatever he did those last three days, he could not keep up with it. Then, we can add in the cortisol and the stress and all that stuff.”
The harmful uses of diuretics in bodybuilding

As Big Ramy’s condition looked way off, medical experts do not recommend using diuretics for bodybuilders. There have been many reported deaths and hospitalizations because of the use of diuretics. Although these are standard bodybuilding practices, some may not end well. Earlier in 1988, a bodybuilder named Albert Beckles collapsed on stage as paramedics noted he suffered from diuretic-induced dehydration.
Another incident happened in 1992 when pro-bodybuilder Mohammed Benaziza died after competing in Europe. An autopsy showed his death resulted from severe dehydration and cardiovascular failure. In 1996, Andreas Munzer died after his liver and kidneys failed because of an electrolyte imbalance. The use of diuretics can harm people’s lives, and it is probably better to keep them away.
