“Why Get Bigger…You Can Only Hurt Yourself”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Decodes Big Ramy’s Blunder That Led to Loss at Mr. Olympia 2022

With Mr. Olympia 2022 wrapped up, fans left the championship with a lot of emotions. Amidst cheers for the winner and boos for certain decisions, the bodybuilding world hoped for an expert’s opinion. And who better than the 7x Mr. Olympia, Arnold Schwarzenegger himself to talk about this year’s event?

In a lengthy conversation with Nick Miller, Schwarzenegger analyzed the highs and lows of the competition. While he appreciated the top 5 contenders and the winner, Hadi Choopan, the veteran pointed out some key blunders that led to reigning champion Big Ramy’s loss.

What did Arnold Schwarzenegger think about Big Ramy’s form?

Having participated in and won so many Mr. Olympia championships, one could safely say that Schwarzenegger knew a thing or two better than the rest. Fans were taken aback when they saw last year’s champion, Big Ramy, ranked fifth in the lineup. However, the Austrian Oak came up with some theories about it.

Schwarzenegger believed that size didn’t always matter, focusing on one of Big Ramy’s key talents. While getting bigger in terms of muscle quality makes sense, increasing in terms of size does not. He also went on to explain in detail that Ramy’s increased stature acted detrimental to his form. His massive deltoid muscles concealed his biceps in some ways, so his whole form was hidden!

Furthermore, Schwarzenegger reflected on the idea of whether getting bigger is better. The legend feels that it’s not only a myth but it can also cause some serious harm if done in a poor way. With reference to Big Ramy, he explained, “he was already so huge! So, therefore, why get bigger! I mean you can only hurt yourself”.

Arnold’s deja vu moment

The former bodybuilder also recalled a similar incident from back in his day. Sergio Oliva beat Schwarzenegger in Mr. Olympia in 1969, due to his larger and more ripped form. However, as Schwarzenegger noted, ‘The Myth’ thought that the formula to win was to get bigger.

Fast forward a few years, the former gained some weight and grew bigger and competed with a lean and lithe Schwarzenegger at the Mr. World. However, this time, it was the bodybuilding icon who won! While Ramy’s loss brought about a lot of disappointment among fans, Schwarzenegger believes that it imparted more knowledge on the nuances of bodybuilding. It will be interesting to see how things change next year.
