SKOL, a word of Norse origin

Skol, or skaal as it is archaically spelled, is the Danish-Norwegian-Swedish-Icelandic-Faroese word that signifies a salute or a toast. Its meaning evolved from a bowl in which beverages were shared between different people. The Skol chant came to be after the Vikings moved to their current stadium. Before every game, the Vikings bang the war drum and the fans respond by clapping their hands and yelling, “Skol.” The chant is also let loose after the Vikings score a touchdown.
