MLB to Allow PitchCom Technology to Avoid Sign-Stealing During 2022 Season

With each day passing, Major League Baseball is only getting bigger and bigger. And the 2022 season is going to be historic for MLB. Notably, MLB is implementing a lot of new rules for the 2022 season.

If reports are accurate, then MLB is all set to introduce PitchCom technology in the upcoming regular season. However, this won’t be the first time that PitchCom will be used in a live game. Earlier in spring training games, teams like the New York Yankees and New York Mets have already tried this technology and given their thumbs up to allow it in the league games as well.

Notably, if MLB allows this technology, then it will be a huge help for the pitchers and catchers to communicate in the live game. And on top of that, it will decrease the chances of sign-stealing.

PitchCom will be a reality in the 2022 season

Earlier, there were reports that the PitchCom might be implemented in Major League Baseball. But as per the latest report from ESPN, MLB has given a green light for all teams to use PitchCom in their league games.

While MLB insider, Jon Heyman also said, this device will help curtail sign-stealing. PitchCom involves a pad with buttons on it. A maximum of five players can use wear this on their wrist to communicate between themselves.

“MLB is expected to announce today the introduction of an on-field device to curtail sign stealing. PitchCom is a device that involves a pad with buttons worn on the wrist allowing quick/covert communication between pitchers/catchers. 5 players per team can use it,” Heyman tweeted.

What is sign-stealing?

When a pitcher pitch on the mound, most of the time, he communicates with the catcher in sign language, regarding his next pitch to the hitter. Sometimes, the hitters decode the sign and sometimes do not. And this process of decoding is called sign-stealing.

Not to forget, during the 2017 season, the Houston Astros cheated every MLB side and used sign-stealing to win the World Series title. And after the implementation of the PitchCom device, the chances to steal signs will be very less.
