The Winter Cup 2024 marked the commencement of the new season for American elite gymnasts. Day 1 of the competition saw the senior men battle it out at the senior men’s competition. After a blazing performance by Shane Wiskus, Yul Moldauer, and Cameron Bock, who led the standings, all eyes turned toward the senior women’s competition, all-around, and events on Friday, Feb 23.
As the competition began at the Kentucky International Convention Center, the highly anticipated comeback of Suni Lee at the Winter Cup 2024 was eagerly awaited by fans. She was poised to show off her new skill; however, a few faults led to upsets for the talented Olympian.

Suni Lee was poised to unveil her new skill, ‘The Lee’, a full-twisting layout Jaeger on the uneven bars at the domestic competition. The move involves launching off the high bar, doing a full twisting forward somersault, and catching the bar again. However, Suni Lee forgot to do her salute before starting her routine.

Suni hit the upper bar with her hands during the competition. Her performance took a heartbreaking turn as she faltered, missing both the full-twisting Jaeger and the Gienger, shattering her consistency. She walked back onto the floor afterward and stepped away for a moment. Unfortunately, she fell once more during her routine, resulting in a score of 11.8. How did the night unfold for her?
Undeterred by the setback, Suni Lee regrouped to compete on the Balance Beam. Opting for her old straddle mount instead of the LOSO BHS BHS, she navigated through her routine with determination. Despite a moment of imbalance during her triple wolf turn, she persevered, showcasing a combination of a front aerial and a split jump. However, a misstep during her attempted side aerial to layout step out (LOSO) resulted in a fall from the beam.

Despite minor bobbles, Lee concluded her routine with a dismount, possibly a timer dismount, earning a score of 12.900, comprising a difficulty score (D-score) of 5.0 and an execution score (E-score) of 7.9. By the end of the night, Lee had garnered an all-around score of 24.700. Amid the ups and downs, Kayla DiCello topped the standings, securing first place with an impressive all-around score of 56.850. Despite the setbacks, fans remain optimistic about Suni Lee’s return to action and eagerly anticipate her next move on the gymnastics stage.
