The USWNT is a star-studded lineup. And that being said, Megan Rapinoe is by far the most influential player amongst all. Her work towards the USWNT’s equal pay campaign is iconic. She, along with other players, led the historic movement that finally saw a settlement after many years. Rapinoe’s fight for justice is incredible as she and her girlfriend, Sue Bird, are prominent advocates for social injustice.

In a recent interview, the talented soccer player talked about the stance of the power couple. They are trying to bridge the gap between men’s and women’s sports.

The Power Couple ft. Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird

Sharing a beautiful bond, the duo started dating in 2016. In a recent interview, a reporter asked them whether they are the modern-day power couple. Both smiled at each other as Rapinoe talked about the barriers in the sport they are trying to overcome.

“I am focused for both of us to become, like, a power broker. I think what we’re really trying to do is force multiply everything that we can from soccer, everything we can from basketball, and the WNBA. Everything that came from this cultural moment. Like, how can we be a part of really bringing women’s sports to where it needs to be,” said Rapinoe.

The fight for equal pay for Women’s soccer teams was led by Rapinoe. Notably, Alex Morgan, Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, and Becky Sauerbrunn filed the EEOC complaint back in 2016. And facing a lot of adversities, they agreed to a settlement of $24 million in 2022.

The equal pay movement is a historic one for the importance it carries. The discrepancy in pay between the men’s and women’s teams was significant. Hence, Rapinoe, with others, is part of a monumental decision that may pave the way for equal pay, in all sports.

Truly, Bird and Rapinoe are the modern-day power couple. Not only are they successful in their respective careers, but continue to break barriers in different movements. Currently, Rapinoe plays for the OL Reign as she re-signed with the club until 2023.
