

Jackie Chan is a martial arts master, actor, and global superstar, and the prolific actor developed his style of action comedy and performed fearless stunts. But the actor had his share of struggles. However, the international superstar did not achieve it all on his own but with some guidance. In fact, Chan admitted he would have never become a world-renowned personality without the guidance of one man.
At the age of seven, Jackie Chan first met Yu Jim-Yuen. For the next ten years, through grueling training and discipline, Yuen molded the ordinary child from Hong Kong into a martial artist and actor. In his book, Never Grow Up, the Honorary Oscar winner spoke about a tragic memory that reminded him of the ten long years of?“suffering”?under Yuen.

What Jackie Chan failed to realize when he was seven
When the Hong Kong resident was seven years old, his parents brought him to master Yu Jim-Yuen at the China Drama Academy. When Yuen tragically passed away in 1997, Chan dropped everything and flew to the United States to pay respect to Yuen. The Oscar winner wrote he “got an instant flashback”?of meeting his master. Chan reminisced about his years of training under Yean.

“I didn?t know at the time that I was in for a long ten years of suffering,”?wrote the Hollywood action star in his book. However, Chan also said when he was young, he didn’t understand that Yuen was preparing Chan for success.?“I also had no idea that those ten years were necessary for me to become Jackie Chan.”?recalled the legendary martial artist.
The global superstar once appeared on?Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. During his conversation with Ross,?Chan described how Yuen trained him?and his classmates. The children would start training shortly after waking up at 5:30 am. First, they would run while balancing cups on both hands. Then everyone performed handstands for hours.
Then came the martial arts training. Chan and his friends would practice punching, kicking, and dynamic stances for hours without pause. Yuen and the other teachers didn’t hesitate to strike the boy even if they made a single mistake.
Yu Jim-Yuen was a father figure to his students
When the action star heard the news of his master’s passing in 1997, he was filming?Who Am I??in the Netherlands. Chan and all of Yuen’s students attended his funeral. Even though the production company, Golden Harvest, lost millions of dollars because of Chan’s sudden departure, they knew they couldn’t stop Yuen’s star student.

“Chan Chi-Peng is the father of Chan Kong-Sang, but Yu Jim-Yuen was Jackie Chan?s father.” The Oscar winner wrote about Yuen in his autobiography.
