This year, Churchill Downs, the location of the Kentucky Derby, has drawn attention for reasons other than horse racing. The frequent fatalities of several horses at the famed racing track were the primary cause of these arguments since they caused equestrian enthusiasts to question the quality of the facility. The arena ultimately announced a series of official inquiries into the facilities and training grounds as a response to the outside world. Racing at the site of the Kentucky Derby, however, will be temporarily suspended until the investigations are complete, as was revealed recently.

Further concerns by a reputed organization

The American non-profit group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) claims 9 million members worldwide in its fight for animal rights. Since the death of the first horse, Code of Kings, on April 29, days before the Derby, the organization has maintained track of the deaths of the horses at Churchill Downs. When the number of equine fatalities continued to rise following the Derby, PETA sent a hurried letter to Lisa Lazarus, CEO of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA), demanding that all horse-related events be halted until an investigation could be completed.

To their relief, HISA announced today that all horse-related events at Churchill Downs will be postponed temporarily. On their official website, PETA also expressed their gratitude and relief that no more horses will be mistreated during the race as a result of this decision. But now that Churchill Downs has relocated its events to Ellis Park, the organization will be keeping a close eye on the action there.
