Athletes and doping is a saga as old as time itself. The world of sports has always been that of cutting-edge competition and some athletes would do anything to gain an edge over their competitors. So, it’s no surprise that many athletes, throughout the years, have been suspected, caught, or even charged with using performance-enhancing drugs to elevate their levels. However, while you’d think drug testing is much more empirical today that’s far from true. Meanwhile, all former performers who used performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) have not been outed. The newest addition to that list of performance-enhancing athletes is a big one, no pun intended.

Wellll…. it’s the Big Show. That’s right, former WWE Champion Paul “Big Show” Wight is the latest name revealed to have been involved in the infamous Biogenesis doping from 15 years ago. This same scandal infamously involved MLB player Alex Rodriguez as well.

The Crackdown on PEDs

The Biogenesis scandal caught on to some of the biggest names in US sports. Still, Paul Wight’s name somehow escaped the headlines 15 years ago. However, newly obtained documents have named the Big Show alongside athletes like boxer Shannon Briggs, prominent athletics trainer David Alexander, and more. The documents claim Tony Bosch, who was convicted for supplying PEDs to several athletes, claimed Wight asked him for stronger drugs.

Even more interestingly, Wight supposedly made his request on behalf of other wrestlers. Bosch also claimed, unbeknownst to him, Wight was already receiving PED supplies from Bosch’s business partner Jorge Velazquez. Although he conceded that some details were true, the AEW star has since denied any involvement in the matter.

Wight’s attorney, Edward Brennan, claimed that his client had never received PEDs of any kind from anyone. “He would never take any PEDs because of his underlying medical condition,” Brennan said. The aforementioned condition is an endocrine system disorder that would make PEDs especially dangerous for Wight.

Consequences of Operation Strikeout

In the 1990s, WWE Chief Vince McMahon went to trial for allegedly distributing steroids to wrestlers in his promotion. However, he was acquitted of all charges. Since then, the company has implemented a very hardline “no drugs” stance, often parting ways with performers who failed their drug tests.

Meanwhile, ‘Operation Strikeout’ resulted in over a dozen MLB players receiving suspensions. It also stained the career of Alex Rodriguez. However, even though steroids were widely used in the WWE in the early ’90s, Wight maintains his abstinence from substances. Do you believe the ‘World’s Largest Athlete’ has always been clean?
