Injuries and inconsistent play have marred the Indiana Fever’s 2025 WNBA season. After making the playoffs last year, fans and analysts expected the Caitlin Clark-led squad to take the next step. However, with their talismanic guard missing out on the majority of the season, things got drastically more difficult. With the Indiana Fever barely able to maintain a .500 record till the All-Star break, Caitlin Clark’s recent injury seemed to have ended all the hopes of making the playoffs.
However, after the All-Star break, the Indiana Fever caught fire. A franchise record 5-game win streak took them to fifth in the standings. This streak eased the concerned fans that even without Caitlin Clark, the Fever can compete and rack up wins. But it seems like the magic has waned a little now. During their recent stretch, the Indiana Fever have lost 3 out of their last 4 games. Worst of all, they suffered a huge loss against the team just above them in standings at the time, the Phoenix Mercury.
Led by DeWanna Bonner, the Fever were completely outplayed. However, it cannot be understated that injuries to Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson were also a contributing factor. Another factor was the inability to cash in on open shots. While missing shots is a part of the game, sometimes, it can make you doubt your abilities. Something similar happened during this game with Aliyah Boston. Discussing the same on her Post Moves podcast, Aliyah said, “I feel like this is everything I’ve been doing consistently, so why is it doing that?”

Aliyah acknowledged the distrust in her abilities that she had to fight during this blowout loss against the Phoenix Mercury. Throughout the game, she was only able to make just 1 shot. The rest of her shots came from just around the paint area, where she is considered to be a dominant force. But that night, nothing was going for her. But despite having a momentary self-doubt, she managed to move past that. Talking on the same podcast, she said, “It’s just one of those that you kind of just have to brush off and like listen, that was a crappy game, but we knew that we had Chicago coming up and we just had to turn that page.”
Earlier in the podcast, Aliyah Boston also recounted some of the factors that contributed to their recovery against the Chicago Sky after devastating losses against the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury. She said, “I think, once we’re like at the end of the road trip. We were out there for about 8 days. But I feel like sometimes, too like some of the shots just weren’t going in. Like we were getting good looks at shots and they just weren’t falling. And I think, those are the like the hardest nights…because you know you’re taking good shots.”
Aliyah Boston’s shot-making in both losses against the Los Angeles Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury left a lot more to be desired. Against the Sparks, she was only able to go 6-15 from the floor. Just like the game against the Mercury, most of her shots came from her preferred paint area. Meanwhile, in the dominant win against the Chicago Sky, she made 7 out of 11 shots she took. The majority of the shots taken in all three games were from the same area. This suggests that it may have been just a case of shots not going in, as Aliyah Boston said.

Wait For Caitlin Clark’s Return Continues as Indiana Fever Signs 11-Year WNBA veteran
Caitlin Clark’s sophomore season has been a huge killjoy for the Indiana Fever and basketball fans around the league. Due to various injuries, she has only been limited to 13 games this season. And in those 13 games, she has struggled to find her rhythm and has struggled to match the expectations her rookie year set. While the Fever did manage to stay afloat, after recent injuries, the situation seems bleak for them.
In Caitlin Clark’s absence, backup point guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson did a decent job of carrying the PG duties. However, losing them both in a single game gave rise to some very genuine concerns. With Caitlin Clark’s return to play still seemingly a long way out, the Fever were in a situation of playing most of their remaining season with a makeshift point guard.

Can the Indiana Fever survive without Caitlin Clark, or is their playoff dream slipping away?
Have an interesting take?
While Sophie Cunningham did a decent job against the Chicago Sky, the Indiana Fever has signed 11-year WNBA veteran, Odyssey Sims, to a hardship contract. Although Sims was not able to avoid Indiana Fever’s recent loss to the Dallas Wings, she does have the potential to hold the fort till Caitlin Clark is ready to step onto the court.

Till now, she has only been able to attend one practice session. With more and more familiarity and knowledge of the Indiana Fever’s playbook, Odyssey Sims should be able to plug in the gap till CC is back.
