After a disappointing loss to the Atlanta Dream in June 2024, Angel Reese made a vow. It’s tough because I hate losing, and I try to go out there every night and try to be as consistent as I can.” Heading into the 2025 season, her focus was on consistency. But the results are far from what she wanted. The Chicago Sky have turned into one of the league’s most unpredictable teams. On their best nights, they can topple powerhouses like New York and Minnesota. At their worst, they unravel like their recent nine-game losing skid.

Sky head coach Tyler Marsh believes this is due to two factors, stating, “I think there are two areas offensively where accountability can be had: with turnovers and with our movement.” But they have made little progress in addressing the first of those issues. In their ten-point defeat against Connecticut, they almost doubled their opponent’s turnover count, gifting easy opportunities that swung momentum away. Marsh did not shy away from accountability either, singling out one of his own players for the lapse.

The player in question is Kamilla Cardoso. The No. 3 draft pick of 2024 had six in her name out of Sky’s seventeen turnovers. Speaking at the postgame conference, Marsh said, “I think that if you ask Kamilla, she wouldn’t be content with the six turnovers. I think she’s got to take care of the ball, just like everyone else has the responsibility to take care of the ball.”

Cardoso was not alone in her struggles as four other Sky players finished with multiple turnovers: Angel Reese, Rachel Banham, Ariel Atkins, and Sevgi Uzun. This highlights how deeply the issue runs across the roster. Unfortunately for Chicago, this abysmal showing came right on the heels of their impressive win over the New York Liberty. In that game, Cardoso delivered 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, while Reese added 21 points and 10 boards. Their combined effort powered the Sky to a 91–85 victory.

Even in that win, turnovers remained a thorn. Chicago coughed up the ball 13 times. But so did New York, which prevented the issue from swinging the outcome. Against Connecticut, however, the same weakness proved far more costly. Still, the Chi-town Barbie found a silver lining amid the 27th defeat, making WNBA history.

Angel Reese makes WNBA history as team stumbles yet again

The sophomore season of the Chi-town Barbie hasn’t unfolded the way she envisioned. While Angel Reese continues to put up career-best numbers, her team keeps stumbling. The Sky sit at 9–27, a record that reflects their struggles. Still, Reese has been rewriting the history books along the way. In their latest outing, she posted 11 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists in 31 minutes.

This was her 19th double-double of the season and the 45th of her young career. That effort etched her name into the WNBA record books. As highlighted by the league’s official X account, Angel Reese notches her 45th career double-double, tying Tina Charles (2010–11) for the most ever across a player’s first two WNBA seasons.” The kicker? Charles reached the mark in 68 games, while Reese matched it in just her 60th.

With Angel Reese making history, why can't the Chicago Sky find their winning rhythm?

Have an interesting take?

This season alone, she’s tied Alyssa Thomas and A’ja Wilson for the league lead with 19 double-doubles. Earlier this year, she also became the fastest player to record 450 points and 450 rebounds in WNBA history and the first ever to pull down 15+ rebounds in four consecutive games. And Reese is making it clear she doesn’t take any of it lightly.

When asked about the team’s motivation to keep competing despite playoffs being out of reach, she gave the perfect response: “I mean, we got another opportunity to play the game that we love, play this professional level and play against the best talent every single night. Not everybody gets this opportunity. So we don’t take it for granted.” Reese and the Sky will get their next chance to prove that mindset when they host the Las Vegas Aces on August 25, 2025.
