It’s Chicago Sky vs Connecticut Sun!  Two teams struggling at the bottom of the standings with little hope of making the playoffs. The Sky enter this game having won just 1 of their last 5, while the Sun have dropped each of their last 5 outings. On paper, it might not seem like the most thrilling matchup, but history has given us enough evidence that games with nothing on the line can often turn out to be surprisingly entertaining.

The Connecticut Sun completely overhauled their roster ahead of the new season. Stephanie White departed for the Fever along with DeWanna Bonner, Alyssa Thomas moved to the Mercury, and Brionna Jones joined the Atlanta Dream. It was clear the management wanted a fresh start under new head coach Rachid Meziane.

The Sky, on the other hand, were in a “win-now” mode, as GM Jeff Pagliocca described before the season after acquiring stars like Ariel Atkins and Courtney Vandersloot. But with an 8-23 record, Chicago sits in 12th place, and those hopes are all but gone. Instead, they will be looking for a win without Angel Reese against the 13th-placed Connecticut Sun.

Prediction: Can the Chicago Sky win without Angel Reese?

The last time these two teams faced off, Angel Reese had a night to remember. She notched the first triple-double of her professional career, scoring 11 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and handing out 11 assists, powering the Sky to a 78-66 victory over the Sun.

In that same game, Hailey Van Lith came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points. Interestingly, both she and Angel Reese are now on the Sky’s injury list. While the star forward is almost certain to miss the game, HVL is still a game-time decision. With four players currently sidelined, it would be easy to assume the Sun head into this matchup as the favorites.

The numbers predict a close game between the two…which makes sense given both teams sit at the bottom of the league. The Chicago Sky is averaging 75.8 points per game, with the Sun not far behind at 74.9. Defensively, it’s equally close—the Sky allow 86.4 points per game, while the Sun give up 87.2.

In an ideal world, if we had to pick the winner, it would have been the Chicago Sky. But given the injury crisis coach Marsh is dealing with right now and the fact that the Sun are playing at home, we are inclined to choose the Sun for this game. ESPN thinks the same, giving the Sun a marginal 50.9% chance of winning.

This one’s shaping up to be a nail-biter! Who are you rooting for? The Sky or the Sun?
