A ‘full-circle moment’ could be on the horizon for Nneka Ogwumike, as her departure from the Seattle Storm has reportedly opened the door for a reunion with the Los Angeles Sparks. Ogwumike had already made a major stride in the postseason by not deciding to re-sign with the Seattle Storm, leaving her free to negotiate with any team, and surprisingly, her former franchise is appearing to take a glance at Ogwumike’s free agency situation.

A reliable basketball page on X, backed by On3 reporter Alexa Philippou’s reporting, recently shared that the Los Angeles Sparks are among the possible candidates to land Ogwumike in the coming weeks.
“Sparks have “strong interest” in Nneka Ogwumike, per @alexaphilippou, @ramonashelburne,” the post read.

Ogwumike’s return to the Los Angeles Sparks is an immensely emotional one. Having played 12 seasons for the Sparks and won the 2016 WNBA Championship, the 35-year-old has a great affection for the team and the city. “I have SO much. So much love for this city that unconditionally embraced this Stanford kid 12 years ago,” the 35-year-old had said while leaving the team in 2024.
Emotions may boost the rumors of Ogwumike’s return to the Sparks. But the team’s momentum might force the 35-year-old to catch her breath before she takes this crucial decision. The LA Sparks haven’t played in the playoffs for the last five years, despite making a marquee signing in Kelsey Plum last season. Thus, it leaves choices for Ogwumike to choose from in this free agency.
The question remains: will Ogwumike choose a homecoming and pair up with WNBPA counterpart Kelsey Plum despite the team’s dismal situation? Or choose a team that’s riding on consistent success in the playoffs?
In the first scenario, we would get to see Ogwumike and Plum bossing the court for the LA Sparks. This in itself can be a sight to behold. The Sparks have already cored Plum, and in all probability, the latter isn’t leaving the franchise. On the other hand, reports are also surfacing that the Sparks might be trading Rickea Jackson for another veteran in Ariel Atkins from the Chicago Sky.
Thus, with all these major positives in the free agency window for Sparks, Ogwumike has an option to join her former team and contribute to the turnaround of their fortunes in the WNBA.

But in the second scenario, too, Nneka Ogwumike has an option with the Minnesota Lynx. It will give her an opportunity to consistently make that stride for a second WNBA Championship with a team that knows how to get the job done in the playoffs. According to reports, the 35-year-old also had a free-agent meeting with the franchise, which generated significant noise in the community.
While it was just a free agency meeting, the Lynx had staged a grand welcome for Ogwumike with balloons that reflected that the 35-year-old would sign with the franchise in the free agency. But later, it was confirmed that it was just a free agency meeting. And Ogwumike hasn’t decided whether she will put pen to paper with the Lynx.
Nneka Ogwumike Might Be a ‘Great Fit’ for Minnesota, Says Reporter
Amid the uncertainties surrounding Nneka Ogwumike in the free agency window, journalist Jackie Powell has explained her stance on the former Lynx player’s opportunities. Speaking on a recent WNBA on NBC show, Powell initially explained that the balloon-gate moment from the Lynx isn’t new and has been prevalent in several sports before it became an issue for Ogwumike’s suitability for the Lynx.
“Nneka went on a visit to the Minnesota Lynx. It’s free agency. They brought out the balloons as a welcome for her, which shouldn’t be a surprise. This happens in free agency in many sports,” Powell said. “I actually think she would be a great fit for Minnesota, especially where it’s looking like Napheesa Collier is not going to be available at the start of the season.”
Ogwumike isn’t the only one who will benefit from this deal. The Minnesota Lynx will miss their franchise player, Napheesa Collier, for the first games due to her ankle surgery. As a result, the Lynx can rely on Ogwumike to power them through single-handedly in the initial part of the season before Collier joins them on the court.
Furthermore, a player of Nneka Ogwumike’s stature changing teams doesn’t limit it to that. It also means an immediate power shift in the league. Over the years, her teams and players might change, but her scoring prowess remains immensely consistent. Even in the last two seasons, when she made that historic change from the LA Sparks to Seattle, Ogwumike’s scoring prowess never went below 16, and her rebounding numbers never went below 7 in the season.
This suggests that even in a new environment, Ogwumike won’t have much difficulty in showcasing her caliber. But all in all, this will eventually come down to what Nneka Ogwumike is demanding from the last stretches of her career. Free agency signings will start on April 11 (Saturday).
With little time left on the clock, what’s your prediction for the 35-year-old’s team for the 2026 season? Do let us know.
