“Cathy [Engelbert] added a lot of games… We had 9 games in 18 days. That’s not responsible for a commissioner.” The Phoenix Mercury athlete Satou Sabally had voiced concerns surrounding the tight-packed schedule this season. But she wasn’t the only one to feel the burn. The scheduling cropped up as one of the biggest reasons for players suffering injuries. With barely any rest between two games, the scheduling poses a major threat to players’ overall health. But amidst the chaos, came a latest update from the WNBA.
This schedule results in a longer waiting period till an athlete returns. Talking of injuries, Caitlin Clark hasn’t been able to completely recuperate since her first injury of the season. Currently sidelined for the third time in a row, Clark is expected to join the active roster by August 12. But she isn’t the only player to bear the side effects of the multiple games. Other prominent players like DiJonai Carrington, Ariel Atkins, Angel Reese, and now Paige Bueckers have taken to the bench.
But while injuries persist across the league, the official WNBA account took to X (former Twitter) and posted a surprising update surrounding today’s games. The account shared a poster with a caption that read, “Hoops all day long? Say less. We’ve got a STACKED slate ahead!” Sharing the Game Day poster, the league officially released a five-game schedule set for July 27, 2025.

In a bid to fulfil the audience’s demand to showcase more games, the league shared the latest game-packed day ahead. Sunday’s games begin with the Golden State Valkyries vs Connecticut Sun at 1 PM and end with Atlanta Dream clashes with Minnesota Lynx around 7 PM. But what caught the fan’s attention was the Indiana Fever versus Chicago Sky game.
After all, with Caitlin Clark sidelined owing to a right groin injury and Angel Reese suffering from an ongoing back injury, it will be exciting to watch two so-called rival teams, Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, battle it out without the star players at the Wintrust Arena today. However, while cameras did catch Reese practising on the hardwood yesterday, it will be crucial to see if she returns ahead of the showdown. And needless to say, the fans too are drawn in splits over the schedule.
Fans stage a social media uproar ahead of Fever-Sky matchup.
“NO CC, not watching,” was a common sentiment echoing across the comment section as the league dropped today’s schedule on X. Most fans refused to watch the game simply because their favorite star, Caitlin Clark, has been sidelined. After all, the Caitlin Clark Effect looms heavy in the air this season, too. Despite her sophomore run marred by injuries, Clark managed to decrease the WNBA viewership by almost 53% when she was initially out.

But the comment section was not just a pity-party in Clark’s absence. A user wrote, “Can’t wait for this lineup! IND vs. CHI is gonna be (lit).” Excited about the upcoming game, the fan was eager to catch the live broadcast of the Fever-Sky game. And while there are very few fans who would pay attention to the game without the star athletes, both teams have players who can rally their rosters without the OG rivals.
Another user wrote, “Golden St Thornton, Indiana Clark and Dallas Bueckers not playing and possibly Chicago Reese.” Citing key players from each team, the comment highlighted the gruelling reality of the WNBA. While Kayla Thornton of the Golden State Valkyries has been sidelined for the remainder of the season after an ACL tear, Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese are expected to return to their respective rosters soon.
However, after her practice clip went viral, a user wrote, “Sky getting blowout… Angel reese out with a fake injury…” Despite sitting out during the Seattle Storm game after a back injury, Chi-town Barbie was accused of a fake injury. Probably because the forward star was practising alone on the hardwood. Sky head coach Tyler Marsh confirmed Reese’s condition and said that she showed great signs of improvement.

With Reese’s playing status put on a game-time decision or GTD, another user had a smart suggestion. “Might as well cancel that 3:00 pm game .. a team playing half a team is diabolical,” they commented. Hinting at the Chicago Sky’s depleted roster, the user suggested that the league cancel the Fever-Sky matchup. After all, it will be an unequal showdown. While Fever only has Caitlin Clark sidelined, Sky’s benched players include Courtney Vandersloot, Ariel Atkins, Michaela Onyenwere, and now Angel Reese.
With Angel Reese’s probable return against the Indiana Fever, can she team up with Kamilla Cardoso and bolster the team towards a victory? While Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell, Natasha Howard, Aliyah Boston, and Sophie Cunningham have adapted their gameplay without needing Clark on the floor anymore, can the Sky beat this unstoppable roster today? That remains to be seen.
